dog is becoming his mushy self again

While I was in the hospital for the c-section, my dog, Boddinton, was at my inlaw's house. He visits their house often but rarely does he stay overnight so he wasn't too happy about that. We brought our daughter home on Saturday and my inlaws brought the dog home on Sunday so we'd have a day to get somewhat settled before doing the intro.

The dog was super amped up, hyper and overly excited both about being home and the strange small human now residing in the house but he is slowly adjusting. Sadly, he started giving me the cold puppy shoulder bc I spend so much time with the baby BFing and bonding. (He is normally very affectionate and mushy, especially with me but he even ate the only shoes that still fit my swollen feet [he's not normally a big chewer on inappropriate items] so I know he's not happy with me.)

Well, last night things changed. When hubby got up to change the baby's diaper, the dog moved from the foot of the bed up to my side. He then nudged his doggy nose under my arm to get my arm around him and cuddled up super close to my side. Yay! My mushy cuddle-pup is back!

How are your furry family members adapting?

  • That is so funny! My pup knows something is happening so she won't leave my side for very long. She normally sleeps curled up with my husband, but lately she's been sleeping with me. No complaints here, I love cuddling with my pooch :). I am a little nervous about introducing puppy to baby. We've been introducing her to the new toys, blankets, and furniture, but only time will tell how she will react to baby. Glad to hear that yours has adjusted quickly!

  • Our dog stayed with my parents, and we brought him home 2 days after we got home. He is a golden retriever, so he loves to play fetch. When he got home, we tried to do an intro, but he could care less about the baby because there was a tennis ball in the middle of the living room floor and that's all he could concentrate on. After a few hours, he finally realized the baby was there. At first he was scared of her and was tucking his tail between his legs so we tried not to push him. Now 2 weeks later, he doesn't leave DDs side. He sleeps next to her and when she starts to cry or make noise, he comes and barks at me and/or DH as if to tell us somethings up (even if we are in the same room). The other day I went to pick DD up out of her rock and play, and I found a nylon dog bone in her lap. At first, I was thoroughly disgusted that she had a nasty bone in her lap, but then I realized that's his way "accepting" her so it was kind of sweet. I'm still not exactly sure when he "gave" it to her because I had been in the same room the whole time.

  • The night before I went into labor, my dog was going crazy. Every move I made, every sound, everything she was jumping up on the bed or pacing back and forth. She totally knew something was going to happen.

Now, since we've been home with LO - she's all over her like white on rice! She could be downstairs and hear LO cry upstairs and this dog is upstairs faster than you can say her name (LUCY). Whenever someone is holding her, even if it's me, she stands there and watches.

It's amazing how dogs just know.

    Such cute stories!

No outside baby for me yet, but when we first started doing the nursery, and getting gifts & toys, our dog would try to take any toy or stuffed animal as his own.  We had to keep the door shut, and keep the baby stuff out of reach.  Slowly, he has come to understand the things in that room are not for him.  Now we leave the door open, and there are tons of things within his reach, but he doesn't take them.  He still goes in and sniffs around sometimes though.

I'm not really too concerned with how he'll react to a baby, as he's been around babies.  He could really care less.  But I am concerned/curious to see how he will react to a complete change in routine.  I mean, I'll go from working 40+ hour weeks, to being home all the time with a baby that will cry & need feeding!  It will be very different for him!
