Baby Showers

ideas for surprise shower

We are having a surprise shower for a co-worker. any ideas on how to feed about 24 ppl for cheap? If possb I would like to stay around $50

Re: ideas for surprise shower

  • For a work shower, plan at a non-meal time, and just go with cake/cupcakes and drinks.  That should keep the budget low.

  • we're greedy around here lol.
  • In that case, if you do want a full-on meal, Little Caesar's $5 pizzas?  Or the DIY route, you could probably do (Americanized) Mexican food on your budget.  Tacos, rice, beans, chips would be relatively easy to do ahead of time, and have ready in crock pots if your work doesn't have much of a kitchen.

Do a potluck.  When we do showers here at work, we usually do a brunch kind of potluck (bagels, muffins, fruit, etc.) and order a nice cake.  $50 for 24 people would be a stretch, I think.

  • I had already said I was gonna do meatballs and pasta salad another girl is ordering a sandwich tray and one is doing queso and chips. The $50 would be for everything else. but others have decided to chip in. some one is doing bbq chicken and rice, another is doing jerk chicken, one is doing fruit and veggies and another is doing drinks. we have decided to make it a diapers and wipe shower. I'm still gonna get her a few other things though
  • Wal-mart has great sub sandwiches for cheap.

I do all of our work showers (except mine probably) we just do cake and drinks... we prefer to spend more of the money on the presents than the food.

If it must be a whole meal thing then potluck is the way to go... make a list of what you need most and let people sign up.

  • Subs. Subway, Publix, and Firehouse are all reasonable. I just discovered Jimmy John's which are good subs too.
  • A friend recently did a pasta bar at her daughter's birthday party that was inexpensive.  She did 5-6 different pastas, 3 sauces and french bread.  It was a big hit.

I agree with some of the PP, go with a potluck. That's what my work did for me at my wedding shower and it was fantastic! Otherwise I would suggest cooking something that is cheaply made in bulk, like lasagna :)
