40 Week Appt.

I set up my 40 week appointment (technically I will be 40W2D)

Doctor set up a NST and ultrasound that day, will check me, and then they want to "discuss" an induction date. She said that the rule of thumb for OB's is to not go bast 42 weeks and she also said that she personally has never gone past 9 days for inducing.

I guess, I was wondering why we would be setting up a NST and another ultrasound at 40 weeks. Wouldn't that be something that would wait till I was a full week over due?

I really do not want to induce and 2 days past my due date my doc wants to discuss induction, like it has already been decided. I guess I figured that they would wait till I was a little more over due to do extra tests and talk induction...

Thoughts? Suggestions? Can I refuse the NST and Ultrasound till 41 weeks? I just want her to come naturally... I am so frustrated.

TIA

Re: 40 Week Appt.

  • Hmm..I had my 40 week appointment on tuesday and was checked for dilation for the first time (I had refused up until then).  Since I was only a 1 they didn't bother to sweep my membranes.  But we did make an appointment for next week where I get a NST and an ultrasound and they will sweep my membranes.  The midwives have found placenta problems do not usually start until 10-14 days after your due date so they like to think about inducing 7-10 days past depending on how much you are dilated and how the NST goes.  I'm also hoping for a natural birth but am totally willing to try a membrane sweep and would have this week if I had been dilated enough.  I think its your body and you should be able to delay the NST for a week if that's what you want!

  • Why refuse it though? I've had two so far, they aren't a big deal, LO passes easily. Your LO will pass easily too as long as everything is going well, and that will just back up your case to wait on the induction. I think its really in your favor to let your LO prove they are doing well and you can hold out a bit.

  • I have my 40 week appointment tomorrow, and I will be 40 +1.  I am scheduled to do the NST test and have an ultrasound tomorrow.  I am fine with it because I would like to know that all is well and my fluid levels are good going past my due date.    I'm not sure if it's not normal though.

My doc won't discuss induction until I hit 41 weeks.

  • The NST and ultrasound are just to make sure she is doing okay in there.  I had both yesterday at my 40 week appointment.  The doctor basically used the ultrasound to make sure there was enough enough fluid and the NST to monitor her heart rate.

Also, I have had an induction scheduled for 10 days past my due date for a week now.  I would also like for my baby to come naturally, but it is nice to know that there is an end in sight.

I know these last few weeks are hard, but don't fret...we are almost done!

  • I'm with the other girls.  I think talking about induction at 40+ weeks is normal.  Hopefully you will avoid the talk and go into labor by then.

I'm with you wanting to do everything naturally and especially avoid induction.  And I would want to wait until 41 weeks as well, but I would probably be ok with the NST but not the ultrasound at 40w2d.

  • Good reasons for having everything checked... I should have asked why but I always seem to forget the questions while I am at the office and think of them later. I guess I just figured the NST and ultrasound would be done if you were a week or more past the due date. But, what do I know? I'm not a doctor.

I still hope to have this baby out by then! Just went for a 3 mile walk... I am going to take a bath and jump my husband when he gets home! Well, waddle over and seduce my husband when he gets home...
