is it ok for a newborn to sleep in a pack and play/play yard

I do not have a bassinet and I feel as though I may not need one. Am I being crazy? I'm not a cheap person but for some odd reason I cannot justify purchasing a bassinet where I only plan on using it for a short while. Is it ok to have a newborn sleep in a pack and play/play yard next to my bed or is that not the right thing to do? I've heard of some people using the pack and play next to their bed during the first few weeks. Has anyone else done this? What was your experience? What are your opinions? Thanks!

  • I hope it is ok, I was hoping to do the same thing.

  • We never had a bassinet with DD. We put her crib in our room the first few weeks. I know people who have used a pnp before too.

  • Yes it is fine.  I have a pack n play set up downstairs for naps.

  • I've heard it's fine. I plan on trying LO out in his own room in a crib from day one, but, of course, that may blow up in my face lol. So we will use the PNP in our room if need be.

  • It's not really recommended for long-term use, or for regular use once baby is sttn, but during the newborn stage where they're up every 2-3 hours overnight (so more like napping) it's fine.  The mattress part of a PNP isn't really supportive enough for long-term, extended use (like, using it instead of a crib as baby gets older) but shouldn't be a big deal for just a month or two.  If you're planning on keeping your baby in your room for an extended time period, you might want to consider a more suitable option, though.

  • DD napped in the PnP when she was a newborn.  We are planning a trip when this LO is less than 6 weeks old and plan to use the PnP for her to sleep out of town.

We're using one but it has the bassinet feature.

My pnp has a newborn napper feature, is that the same as a bassinet feature? Would it be safe for me to fall asleep while he's in the napper feature? I know, I must sound so stupid but I'm a FTM and am wondering if he'll fall out of the newborn napper feature and am wondering if it would be safer just to put him in the lower portion of the pnp. I'm currently planning on short-term (maybe 6 weeks) and then transfer him to his crib in his own room.

  • you will hear alot of different opinions...with my son he slept in the infant top of PnP then in bottom of it till he was able to climb out at 9months and thats when we moved him to twin bed on floor... some will say its not supportive on babys back but the mesh sides of a PnP seem alot safer than a crib to me... you will have to find what works best for you and your situation... I plan to have baby in my room in PnP same as I did with my son It worked perfect for us and even though my son was in our room with us till he was 1.5 yrs old we never had any problems when he got in his own big boy room... he still would rather sleep alone in his bed...

  • Thats what we're doing, ours happens to have a bassinet/napper on it, but I've been debating taking that off and just using the play yard. It makes me nervous to have LO up in the air like that bassinet is...

  • So it's sounding like a newborn cannot fall out of the napper/bassinet top portion of the pnp. I'm just over paranoid I suppose because the fact that it doesn't have sides like a conventional bassinet worries me a bit.
  • With DS we had/still have the one with the newborn napper feature and he loved it. We kept the PNP downstairs for daytime and had the bassinet in our room for night time. He didn't go in a crib until about 2mo. I think 6wks in the PNP is fine. Once he outgrew the newborn napper then he napped in the bassinet part. Once he was sleeping in his crib though we did away with the PNP for naps b/c he wouldn't sleep in it.

  • During our pre-natal classes it was recommended not to use a PNP or bassinet as they are not safety regulated like cribs are.  This is in Canada though so not sure about US or other countries.

The newborn napper is NOT recommended to be used without supervision so when your sleeping it's a no-no.  It's soft and "pillowish" and said to increase the risk of suffocation.  The PnP you linked has a bassinet option.  You just have to take out the newborn napper and the changing table.  That will be fine for over nights.  It took me FOREVER to pick a PnP because of this.  It's sooo hard to know whats okay and whats not as a FTM.  Good luck!

I should add, the newborn napper is great for naps so don't worry about that.  It's just extended unsupervised sleeping that it's not good for.

Good to know. So to be safe I will remove the napper and changing table portion and put him in the lower, pad portion of the pnp, right?

Yep!  The PnP you have says it has a removable full size bassinet feature.  It just means that there is a higher level in the PnP for when the baby is little and can't crawl out of the PnP so you don't have to kill your back grabbing him/her all the time from the bottom.

  • We used a PnP for DS from about 2 months....I did end up putting a softer blanket underneath the PnP fitted sheet to give it a little more squish.  The PnP was so darn hard.  Probably not recommended by the manufacturing company but it was a little more comfortable for him without posing the risk of blanket suffocation.  The PnP was nice to have right next to the bed so I didn't have to get up and walk into his room.

  • Dd slept in the bassinet of the pnp for the first five months. This lo will do the same.

  • We used this mini PNP for DS for the first few months and plan to use it again. I didn't want a full sized PNP taking up so much space in our bedroom but didn't want to waste the money on a bassinet.

We had a full sized PNP too (to use at other people's houses/traveling) but ended up using the mini way more often.

  • Why not? Both my kids have. DD1 til 5 months, DD2 til almost a year. Both transitioned to a crib with no problems or no developmental issues and are great sleepers. DD3 will start off in a RnP and then go to the PnP.
