January 2011 Moms

what activitiies/ toys would you bring on road trip?

In June we will be headed to upstate NY for 5 days - it will be 7 hours in the car, myself, ds and a friend - dh will be on his motorcycle with friends husband.  Then in July we are going to KY which is a 17 hour drive - we are stopping overnight along the way.  What activities would you bring in the car for your ds or dd to play with?

So far I am thinking -

some cars, color wonder coloring books (so he doesnt draw on anything else), a magna doodle, airfilled squshy animal things he has, also I have a portable dvd player but so far ds had had 0 interest in tv or movies.

Re: what activitiies/ toys would you bring on road trip?

  • We just did a 12 hour trip to SC and it went well. We decided we'd stop every 3 hours, we started at 3am, stopped at 6 for coffee, then at 9 for breakfast, then at 12 for lunch. We got there in 12 hours and only stopped for 10-15 mins max including gas each time.

The non drivers sat in the back with and she slept in the morning hours until around 9am. We bought the headrest attachment for the iPad since she is rear facing. She didn't really liked playing with anything, so she watched like 3 hours of TV lol. She played with her crayons, played picaboo, and ate during the rest of the time.lol The ride went very very well.

  • Loading the player...
  • DD likes Eebee, Sesame Street/ Elmo, Dinosaur Train and Sid the Science kid (songs). We also have a pouch of matchbox cars in the car that she likes to play with.

    - I hope my trip goes half that well!  DS is really very good in the car, but he has never had to be in the car for that long of a time frame.  Our plan was to stop every 3 hours as well.

We were surprised both ways too, but I think stopping helped and also we left while it was still early so half of our trip was spent with her sleeping. She was getting mad at around 2 pm so that last hour was a little tough but we were expecting the entire trip to be like that haha. I think your LO will do great since he is ok with the car seat.

  • JT always plays with My Pal Scout in the car. And hopefully your friend will sit in the back and consistently feed him snacks. I do not envy you! Good luck!!
  • mirrors, books, coloring books and handheld toys, like her fisher price iphone thinger is what we usually use, though for relatively shorter trips.  Angry Birds tends to calm her down, too.

we have scout. I should update his songs and things so it is all new! Good call.  Do you have the scout dog that is all curled up and sings songs about nap time and plays the lullabies (I'm not sure what it is called)? It is the only way we get kain to bed at night!

  • We always leave around nap time to start our long trips (3-4.5 hours to mine or H's parents) That usually kills 2 hours, then make sure to stop for a walk around break and pull out all the distraction stuff. I hand it back 1 thing at a time and throw a sippy and some cheerios in there as well. All the stuff you listed is what we take.

  • We try to leave around nap or bed time so she sleeps a good bit and that usually helps a lot.  I also hide some of her books and smaller toys that I know she likes a few days before we leave then put them in a basket right next to her car seat that day so she can reach in and grab different toys as I drive.  The majority of road trips have been just E and I but it's so much easier when you have someone who can hop back there with them.  I also always put a small cooler up front with me with filled sippy cups and snacks that I can put in her snack cup for her to munch on.  Let me know how the portable dvd player works, I've been thinking of investing in one since we travel so much.
