Smilelari (and other BLW/solids moms)

Thoughts on eggs? I am going to ask the pedi on Sat. when we have our 6 month appt. but I have been reading several articles that seem to be in favor of offering eggs to babies under 1 year, which differs from what I have read in the past. I've even read that eggs are a good first food and are a good source of protein. Thoughts? Have you tried eggs yet? Yolk only or the whole egg?

Re: Smilelari (and other BLW/solids moms)

  • We tried eggs yesterday.  I felt ok with my decision and gave it to her in the morning and figured we would watch very carefully and have the day to take her for medical help if needed.  She did fine.  I have read both sides, but for us, we decided to try it as a first food rather than wait the year.

  • I have read that it's the yolks that are ok and the whites that cause the allergy.  I had a friend who gave eggs to her 6-month old by hard boiling it, and mixing a little bit of yolk with bm.  I'm still on the fence on whether I will do eggs or not.

  • We started solids with baby joining us at dinner and I don't expect that we'll add another meal (breakfast) for a few weeks anyways, so I haven't really thought about it.  Even with DS, though (when we did the traditional puree route) it was pretty darn early that we introduced scrambled eggs.  Maybe 8 or 10 months?  Seems that I decided it was ok after doing some reading that said that beyond 6 months introducing foods like that didn't increase the likelihood of developing allergies.  The only reason to delay is that you as a parent might feel more comfortable if there is a reaction.

We started with dinner as well a couple weeks ago, but he seems to be getting increasingly more irritated when we sit down for any meal if we don't give him something to play with/gnaw on as well. Yesterday at brunch we gave him some fresh fruit to eat but I was toying with the idea of giving him some of my omelet and wasn't quite sure if that was too risky to do or not.

  • My pedi said no eggs until 1 year. If you have allergies in the family, I would wait until 1 to 1 1/2 years old.
