4 Month Well Visit

So DS had his 4 month appointment today.  It went well - I was happy to see that he gained 3 pounds and grew 3 inches!!  The dr told me I could start giving him 2oz of water here and there since it is getting hot outside. He said to give it from a sippy cup and that tap water was fine.  He said, "if its good for us, its good for him."  Well that is going to make my life a lot easier.  I've been boiling his water for his bottles every day so if he is going to drink tap water, I guess I don't need to boil water anymore.

Would you or do you give your LO tap water?  We use a brita filter so he wouldn't be getting it from the faucet anyway.  Also, has your pedi mentioned giving your LO water.  I've read that a lot of doctors don't recommend water as much as they used to, so I'm just curious.

Lastly, the nurse who gave Cam his shots today was new.  She brought Hello Kitty bandaids because she said she didn't look at his chart and assumed he was a girl.  Hmmm......that wasn't a plus in my book.  I could care less that he is wearing Hello Kitty bandaids, but I don't like that you didn't look closely at his chart.  How do I know you even grabbed the right shots?!  Poor guy screamed when the second one went in.  Hate. Hate. Hate. that part.  But he is sleeping now....so hopefully rest helps him feel better.

Re: 4 Month Well Visit

  • I BF, but I have no qualms with tap water.  It's a lot better quality than drinking water in other parts of the world.  It's what I drink, so in an indirect way that's what he's getting.

Personally, I would only give my DS water with solids since it's not as watered down as breastmilk.  As it gets hot, I would rather just let him feed longer than fill his tummy with water.  Then again, he's probably one of the youngest on this board as he was born Jan 31, so what he can/cannot have yet will probably vary from others here.

  • I do not drink tap water therefore I would not give it to my son. The water out here can be nasty. There are reports pregnant women aren't suppose to drink it. We are getting our water from another source but it can smell funny when I shower with it. Would I give him bottled water. If my doctor said it was ok then yes but not much. I still want him to eat.
  • My doctor said there was no need to give water, they are on a liquid diet so they get plenty. (I live in East Texas where it is very hot, and she is not concerned) If I did give her water I would probably filter it. We drink filtered or bottled water, so I would do the same for her.

  • Hey there! Yeah, I would give tap water...However, it would depend on the city, and the water.

My doctor's office knows about the water in the area, and is able to indicate to me if we can use the water, or should use filtered or bottled water.

And, dang, that nurse automatically should have checked the chart and confirm who you and you son are before sticking needles in. Wow!

Sorry your experience was kinda crummy, but YAY for a healthy well check!

(I'm Christina, by the way. :)

We drink from our Brita so that's what I would give him. Our animals get Brita water too but that is just because I am too lazy to pick up the bowls and fill them up at the sink.

We give K tap water with his formula, but our city has pretty good quality tap water. We have also fed him a couple ounces of straight water at a time when he was constipated per doctor's orders, it didn't seem to help him much and I don't think he liked it (kept spitting it out and coughing)

Sorry the 4 month appointment was rough! Ours is in a couple weeks, I'm excited to see how much he's grown, not excited for the vaccinations :(

  • We give E tap water with her formula.  Pedi said it was absolutely fine to do so.  E had her 4 month visit last week and the pedi didn't say anything about giving her plain water.

Water has no nutritional value, so I would not give it to LO yet. It's better to fill his tummy with formula. If you give him water, he won't have as much room in his stomach for formula. You have to be really careful giving young babies water, as it can flush out electrolytes and cause water intoxication. With DD1, she started getting a small amount of water at 6 months just to practice using a sippy cup.

I agree with the bolded. My ped has told me no water until at least 6 months. But again, every doc/baby/situation is different.

  • I have no qualms with tap water. It's what we've been using for our LO's formula since the doctor told us to start supplementing (the doctor mixed the first bottle of formula with tap water right in the office). But! I live in a major metro area with really good water. Not everyone does.
