3rd Trimester

Reasons For Needing Scheduled C-Section

Hi 3rd tri ladies!

I am 28 weeks and 5 days pregnant and everything so far in my pregnancy (knock on wood) has gone very smoothly. My cousin who is 31 is about 26 weeks pregnant and just excitedly posted on facebook that her C-Section was officially scheduled for August 9th. I guess my question is why would someone have a scheduled c-section and at what point in the pregnancy would your OB inform you of that decision?

Re: Reasons For Needing Scheduled C-Section

  • I had a Csection with my first because she was breech.  It was too dangerous for her to come out vaginally (possible pro-lapsed cord).  This time around I was offered a VBAC but she is also breech.  I have a heart shaped uterus and this is probably why they never turn.

I never did schedule the first one (my water broke at 36 weeks exactly) and I think we scheduled this one at about 28ish weeks.

  • having had a previous c-section or having placenta previa (placenta over the cervix) are two they would schedule that far out.

Breech babies as well, but they can turn and so they don't usually schedule until closer to the due date since you may not need one if they do turn.

  • Oh great! Thanks for your responses. Just when I saw her post on FB I was like...hmm that route hasnt even been mentioned to me yet, so maybe I'm in the clear for now?

  • there really are thousands of medical reasons for a scheduled c section.
  • Honestly at 26 weeks I don't know offhand a reason for scheduling a c-section - placenta previa can resolve itself, so can breech presentation, at that point.  If she's had a previous c-section and either she doesn't want a VBAC or her doctor doesn't do them then I suppose that's one reason.  There are probably other medical conditions though, heart conditions is one I've heard previously, which indicate a cesarean birth rather than laboring.  So true, there are many possible medical reasons but it does seem rather early to me to be scheduling.

  • My c section was scheduled at 24 weeks. I was born with severe hip dysplcia and if wasn't discovered until I was in high school. In college, I had both hips reconstructed. Pushing a baby out of my "area" is out of the question and dangerous.

I don't think you are ever 'in the clear.' Like a pp said, there are a million reasons you could possibly need a c-section. Any of those reasons can happen up until the due date.

For me, my son was huge, stuck in my ribs, and I never progressed. We tried natural but it just didn't work. This time around I am scheduled because the DR said that would be best for my body type and my history of a big baby and a failure to progress. Also, #2 has been breech at every appointment so far.

  • I had a scheduled c-section and will have another because I have a brain disease that makes it unsafe for me to push during labor.  A blood vessel in my brain could burst and I could die.

Because I didn't want to deal with an induction, possible failed labor and emergency surgery.

Best decision I ever made. My c/s was lovely.

I did all that the first round. This one is already scheduled. I'm not doing that shits again.

That's exactly how I feel.  I'd rather have a scheduled c-section than try for VBAC only to end up with another emergency c-section.  Mine isn't scheduled yet, but will be at the next appt.

  • My first baby was overdue and I was induced... causing two days of contractions and pain in the hospital, only to have to have an emergency c-section because my water had broken too long before and I just wasn't progressing.  This time, the chances are that I would not progress again and would end up needed a c-section, even if they do try induction again.  Also, my doctor doesn't recommend a VBAC unless it's been at least 22 months since your last c-section, and my babies are closer together than this, so a c-section is the recommended way to go and I am all for it.  I had a great recovery last time and am happy with my minimal scar.  I couldn't wait to get mine scheduled, just to know target date!!  There is still a chance this baby will try to come early, but it's not likely so the scheduled c-section date is very exciting.  It takes the not-knowing-when-it-will-happen stress out of the mix, somewhat.  I didn't announce mine on facebook, but I did text everyone who will likely want to be here for the birth.
  • My first c-section was an emergency c-section due to fetal distress and failure to descend after 27+ hours of labor. My daughter was a 'big baby' at 9 pounds 6 ounces.

This LO will be a scheduled c-section due to my previous c-section and the fact that I had a failure to descend c-section last time. This baby is also measuring big and I do not want to go through labor again only to end up with another c-section. It was very traumatizing for me last time. I am still dealing with some of the emotional upset and other issues regarding it. My OB suggested the repeat c-section....from the beginning but left it ultimately up to me and I needed to decide by 32 weeks. DH and I decided it was the best option for me considering my history.

  • I had a c/s with DD#1 because she was breech.  I have scheduled this c/s already.  We didn't schedule with DD#1 until 36w or so, but we also knew if she flipped we'd cancel the surgery.  Maybe she has placenta previa or some other issue?  There are lots of reasons to have a c/s that are medically necessary.

  • Another reason for needing a scheduled c-section is if you have gestational diabetes.  I have been planning a vaginal birth all along until I was diagnosed with GD. Now, my doctor says GD increases your chances of needing a a c-section and at this point a c-section is highly likely for me.  The baby can get very large which makes it difficult to deliver vaginally.

Another reason would be a fibroid.  My girlfriend who is pregnant needs a c-section due to a fibroid in her uterus.  I think there are lots of reasons one might need a c-section.

I have Crohn's Disease, and because of some of the complications I've experienced from CD, pushing could cause life-threatening issues.  Another friend with CD has the same problem.

Heart conditions, prior surgeries, injuries, etc are also common reasons for a scheduled CS.  So long as you've had a relatively healthy life and your OB hasn't mentioned needing a CS for medical reasons, don't worry about it.

  • I have vasa previa and have a scheduled c section. It would be fatal for the baby if I went into labor on my own.

I knew about this at 29 weeks. I know a lot of woman who get the diagnosis earlier.

  • Many Many Many reasons...

Just to name a few...big baby, breech, etc.. Its none of your business really.

I agree.  That was rude and uncalled for.

  • I currently have a low laying placenta and if it doesn't move I will need a c/s.The risk in going into labor is that the dilating of my cervix could cause the placenta to tear or abrupt, which could suffocate the baby. I will have a good idea if I will need one around 30wks and I will know for sure by 36wks.

Not rude, not uncalled for..Simply stating that other people's medical problems are no ones business but their own. Ever hear of HIPAA?

What is the friend/cousin is HIV+ and had to have a csection? Is that her business? NO.

People think that if someone posts something on FB they are entitled to reason/cause. Such is not the case

I had an emergency c-section w/ my 2 yr old because I tried for a VBAC and ended up in the beginning stages of a uterine rupture so I can't even go into labor. My c-section has been scheduled for a while.
