2nd Trimester

Fifths Disease, anyone?

So I got a call from a co-worker today after work, saying she has Fifths disease. I guess there is just a slight chance that it could have even be spread to me- but regardless I had to go get blood work done so my doctor can check and see if I have the necessary antibodies. I won't get any results for a week or more though.

Has anyone else been exposed? Has anyone known anyone with exposure? Most importantly-  do I have permission to cover my co-workers in Purell?

Re: Fifths Disease, anyone?

  • yes, I was exposed to it this weekend.  I told my dr today at my appt and she got all worried.. HOWEVER, she said that in standard blood work they test for immunity, which I have.  She said 95% of healthy adults have immunity to it.  Call your dr and they will look at your blood work.

  • Wow- I'm glad to hear the 95% number!! I did call my doc, and he had not screened me for it- so he sent me to the lab already tonight and got more blood drawn. I guess it could take several days for the lab work to come back, and he wanted me to get it done prior to the holiday weekend.

    ::fingers crossed::

    Glad to hear of your immunity!

  • This was part of my first appointment bloodwork and I am *not* immune, so I have to be really careful not to come into contact with this disease.

    Good luck!  It's good you told the doc once you found out.

  • I really hope for your sake that your co-workers take strange symptoms more seriously than mine do!! This woman and I were talking this morning about how strange her rash was- that she thought was brought on my a change in medication. Little did I know it could be fifths disease!! This woman is like an incubus though- I should have assumed that I should avoid her for 9 months.

    I am glad that my doctor was so good about everything- now it's just a waiting game.

    BTW my DH is from Long Island- born in Babylon, grew up in Patchogue. Wink

    I'm in that area!  Grew up in East Patchogue and now live in the Holbrook area.  I commute to NYC for work, it's a hike but what can I say, I love my company!

  • I can imagine that it would be a nice get away from the craziness in New York!! He really misses the area sometimes- usually this comes out when we pass a 7-11. Haha

    Have a great Thanksgiving!!
