Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

how did you wean (bottle)?

Just wondering how everyone else has done it.  DD is finally drinking milk from a sippy and I am down to 3 bottles a day and one in the middle of the night.

Today at nap time I offered her water in her bottle, she drank a few ounces and fell right asleep.  Has anyone done this?

  • I took it away at 11.5 months and never looked back.  However, it was never a "comfort" item for DS so it wasn't a big deal to him.

  • We went cold turkey and she was fine with it. She still drinks milk though, and it's from the sippy/ straw.
  • Same as PPs. We gave him a straw sippy one day and never looked back.

I've heard of people doing water at night, its fine if it works for you. We dropped all day bottles and replaced them with a cup. The bedtime bottles was last to go, we just put her to bed with a different routine. Bath, pjs and a book or a quick episods of her favorite show while we snuggle and then bed. It was pretty easy.

  • For the most part we went cold turkey. Around 11 months, we were out and realized we left a bottle at home. So we bought a spur of the moment cup for her. (she has been using the sippy since about 6 months for water). She had no problems with that; and she was already down to 3 bottles. Over the next 2 weeks or so we gradually took the bottle away for the cup. After she was completely on the cup, we started a gradual change to WCM.

  • Thanks for asking this.  I am currently trying to get rid of the bottles.  DD is good with drinking from a sippy, but bottles are definitely her favorite thing.

  • DS was BF and only got a bottle when he was with the sitter (one occasionally two a day because I wasn't gone long). Once he turned a year old it was easy to quit cold turkey because he had only used them about 4 months and not even everyday. GL with weaning!

DS gave it up totally on his own at 10 months.  He lost interest in it.  First, it was the nighttime bottle at 10 months, turned head away or would take 2 drinks and spit it out.  I just quit offering it at that point and he didn't even protest.  I just gave him a drink of water out of a sippy before bed.  Then, I quit giving him a morning bottle and gave him breakfast earlier.  He also gave up the nuk without protest too when he was 17 months old.   I just didn't give it to him one night and he didn't care and the rest is history!

  • What we did might have been a wee unconventional lol.... When DD was 10 months we were down to 3 bottles total..2 a day and 1 night time, at 11 months DS was born and was fully BFing (at the time)..we switched her to WCM with permission from the pedi and during the day she had 1 bottle of WCM and 1 cup of WCM along with water and sometimes juice. At night we actually gave her powdered milk...it looked the same to her..powder...and we had to shake it like a FF bottle..it was luke warm..and by 13 months she was completely off the bottle..we just slowly transitioned her 2 remaining bottles into her cup.. like I said maybe unconventional but it worked wonderfully for us...

Sorry that got so long lol
