Eczema?

Anyone's LO have it? DS has red, rashy cheeks, the doctor and nurse practioner both haphazardly diagnosed eczema. We have tried the hydrocortizone cream, it did nothing, tried Aveeno baby eczema cream, and aquafor, both did little. I feel like it may not be eczema, but they are just giving it a convenient diagnosis, and telling me he'll grow out of it. Well it's been here for like 3 months, at least, and it's not getting any better, actually, today it looks worse. It's not sooo serious looking, like some I have seen online, but I wonder about a ped dermatologist, but we need a referral from the Dr. who thinks it's no big deal. So, basically wondering if anyone else's LO diagnosed with eczema, if so, did you find anything that helped?

Re: Eczema?

  • My DD had it as a newborn until about 8ish months.  She also had it on her cheeks but also had it on her shoulder and her legs.  Nothing really worked for us either and it could go away and come back.  What we noticed did work and would clear it up was sunlight and fresh air.  Not sure why it worked but it did.  It has since been gone since about 8ish months!

Also, if you dont use Aveno soothing creamy body wash try that.  It helped keep her skin moist.

  • I've heard CJ's Butter is good for eczema, you could get a sample size and try it out. It's CD safe rash cream. Also maybe Calendula Cream. We use CA Baby Calendula wash and it's really good on LO's skin.

  • That's kind of the thing about eczema. There is no test or official way to diagnose eczema. There is also no official cure-all, sadly. My DD has it but it has lessened as she gets a little older. I'm still holding out for it to go away, but I know plenty of adults with it. And since there are different strains and different triggers and different symptoms, you will just have to try different things to see what helps.

I agree with whoever recommended the aveno cleansing cream. But that (for us) is more for everyday use, not curing something already there.I would make sure you are trying to narrow down anything that could be aggravating the flare up. Detergent, fabric type of clothing/bedding, food, etc.

Have you talked to the dr. again? 3 mos. seems like a long time to me. I Not the kind who calls the doc for every little thing, but I would want more help than that for anything that goes on for that long! Good luck.

DD had it, but only on her legs and arms. The Aveeno Eczema lotion cleared it right up. Sorry it didn't work for you. Hope you can get some answers soon!

  • Aveeno made it MUCH worse for Gabe. It has oat in it, so I think he may have a sensitivity to oats.

What did work?  Neutrogena Fragrance Free Oil.  We put it in his bath, slathered him with it when he was done, then slathered him with aquaphor.

NAME BRAND aquaphor.  The generic stuff did jack.

We never went to the Dr. for the first long while because I thought it was a teething rash caused by drool. Then the longer it went, he still never got any teeth, and his drooling has lessened. I was finally fed up, and he had this terrible patch under his chin, so we went to the Nurse Practioner (quicker than getting in with the Dr.) about a month ago. She said eczema, (and it was a yeast infection under his chin, so thank goodness we went) she told me to get him hydrocortizone and use some special face wash for the eczema. It didn't work. 3 weeks after that (last week) he had his 9 month well visit. His Dr. said eczema, said to stop using hydrocortizone, as it had been too many weeks, and start moisturizing during the day and vaseline at night, and "he'll grow out of it". Well some days are worse than others, but I just feel like there has to be SOMETHING that can help. This is why I am now considering a ped. dermatologist.

  • We dealt with it from 5 months until about 8 months, basically the winter months.  We used Aquaphor all over, and hydrocortisone on the really bad spots (his seemed contact triggered, so a pair of socks could create chemical burn like rashes if left on overnight).  We made sure to use only 100% cotton pajamas, cut down to baths every other night and only used soap if he was really dirty.  Most of it cleared up after a few weeks, but his cheeks were red for a long time.

We also stopped using soap (like at all, he gets soaped up like once every 2 weeks) and did cotton only.  Fleece messed him up!

  • My LO was diagnosed with eczema but I think it's a catch-all diagnosis, so the "cure" isn't all going to be the same.  I think my LO has a sensitivity to soaps and detergents, and that was making her skin irritated.  My DH's niece has skin issues so we think it's related to that.

We cut down her baths to 1-2 times per week, and use tepid water (she doesn't seem to mind but it's too chilly for me, haha!).  We soap her up at the end and get her out of the bath quickly.  We use Aveeno brand products.  We also lotion her at least once a day.

We tried less lotion, but she needs it every day.  We also tried soap-free baths but that didn't work either.

Our pedi said to make sure she doesn't overheat b/c excess sweat can lead to flareups, but my LO likes to be warm (long-sleeved onesie, fleece footy PJs, and fleece sleepsack at night....otherwise she wakes up crying b/c she's too cold, sassypants).
