Blood pressure up but tests normal...

At my last couple of appointments my blood pressure has been a little high but it's always gone down pretty close to normal after laying down for 10 minutes on my left side. At my appt. this past Monday it was up to 140/100 and only went down to 140/90 after laying down. The doctor ordered bloodwork and I've been pretty worried since. She just let me know that all the bloodwork came back normal and we'll just take it day by day. I have my last ultrasound tomorrow, at 37 weeks and my next appt is on Monday. I had planned on working until May 31st (due date June 7) but wonder if I'm pushing it. I know my doctor hasn't ordered me to stop working but I wonder if I should move my last day up a week so I can relax. My feet and ankles are swollen beyond recognition and my hands are constantly throbbing and swollen so I'm pretty uncomfortable with the 1 hour commute back and forth and working 9:00-6:00. Then again, I'd hate to take the time and have the baby come late. Ugh. I hate that we (women) have to make these choices about working until the last minute over spending the extra time with our babies.

  • My blood pressure has stayed high, but I have no other symptoms that would point to something like preeclampsia. My doctor has put me on modified bedrest and advised me not to work any longer. I would ask what they want to do with you just to be sure and let them know what you're thinking.

  • The past few appointments I have been to, my BP has been high, and then they retake it at the end of the appointment, and it's fine, but they still make me get bloodwork done, and it always comes back normal.

I think what happens is I leave work and rush to my appointment because I don't want to be late, and then I'm all flustered when I get there, so not only can I not breathe because I rushed in there, I'm still feeling anxious from rushing to the appointment, and then they take my BP, and I have the high #.

I wish they would just take it for me at the end of the appointment every time so we didn't have to keep doing the stupid bloodwork. lol

  • I agree with talking it over with your doctor.  My BP is high off/on but I am on BP meds since I've had high BP since I had my DD in 2010.  I have no swelling or any other symptoms and all of my lab work has been completely normal.

On Monday, my doctor took me off of work due to the blood pressure but also because DD2's heartrate was much higher than normal for a longer period of time than normal.  With the two combined, he decided to be safe rather than sorry.

But, at the same time, I am a vet tech and have a very physical job so if I had a desk job, maybe he would have advised differently.

So, I'd talk the situation over with your doctor.  :)

  • I agree with PP, talk with your Dr. & discuss your commute & type of job with him.  I am on a modified bed rest due to chronic hypertension & my blood pressure has been up off and on.  All my other test come back fine, I just have to monitor my blood pressure at home & have weekly ultrasounds & blood work as needed. Good Luck.
