Hospital Bag

Ok, so I KNOW this question has been asked a million zillion times.  And I should have one already packed.  But I am such a slacker, and I don't.  I think part of me is not 100% ready for baby to be here, so I think "If the bag isn't packed yet, the baby can't come yet!"  But it's time I got with it as I'm 38wks!

Please tell me:

What do you have packed in your bag? (if you haven't delivered yet)

And for mommas who HAVE delivered, what did you pack that you totally did NOT use, and what was a lifesaver?

Thanks!

Re: Hospital Bag

  • I haven't packed my bag yet either... Indifferent I figure when my water breaks & DH is freaking out about getting me to the hospital ASAP I'll be telling him to hold on I gotta pack my bag & be getting lectured how he's told me for weeks that I needed to get this done..

  • I'm working on mine, just tossing things in as I think of them. I'm 39 weeks, I'd better get a move on! So far I have a newborn outfit and a 0-3 outfit, my baby book, a nursing gown and some bathroom items (a lush soap sample, hair ties, head band, things I wont need now).

I figure I'm going to want to wear my yoga pants up until the big day, and I can throw them and a couple of tanks in my bag while I'm in labor as well as a change of clothes for DH.  oh, I'm going to throw my camera and battery charger in there right now.

When I took a tour of the maternity ward they said to pack what you would for a weekend at a hotel.

I did not use:  pacificers, diapers, wipes, 0-3 month clothing. baby hats,

I did use:  comfortable stretchy clothing for me (2 outfits), aden and anais blanket, 2 newborn outfits, flip flops,  pad to wear home (the hospital ones are rediciously large and I didn't need them by the time I went home), larger cotton underwear, boppy, camera/charger, laptop

  • If you forget any of your basic toiletries, no big deal. The hospital has you covered. I forgot my toothbrush and they provided one.

In my experience, the essentials included: comfy sports bra/nursing sleep bra (maybe 2), lanolin, cell phone and charger, camera, comfy clothes for going home.

Dont stress too much over the hospital bag. Nearly anything you forget can be provided by the hospital or your SO can get it later.

  • I am a bare essentials kind of gal so this is what I have...

    - Underwear

    - sleep nursing bra, nipple cream, and breast pads

    - 1 pair of pajamas

    - Shirt to wear home with my pj pants - I'm not that fancy and the drive is about a mile so I am sure wearing my pj's home will be just fine.

    - outfit for LO to go home in

    - pacifier

    - necessary toiletries (toothpaste, shampoo, etc...)

    -  This back massage thing that my DH got from Bath & Body - It is in the shape of a cat and feels amazing. I figured it wouldn't hurt...

I figure if I really need something else... Then DH or a family member can run home to get it for me.

All of this, I figure I could have packed after I went into labor. I wouldn't sweat it... Just have a mental note of what you need to grab and or make a list and you will be fine.

  • We're due the same day... and I've only packed a few items. I get overwhelmed because I feel like I need a lot of the stuff before then.

  • Oh... and the camera, cell phone, and charger... What would we do without these things.
  • I am having the baby a week from today and I do not have anything done and espcially have no hospital bag packed. I am working on it slowly this week. But here is what I packed last time:

For Me: Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash, Toothbrush and Toothpaste, Contacts, Contact solution, a small amount of make up (foundation, powder and mascara) chap stick, lotion (unscented). Nursing Tanks, Yoga pants, flip flops, slippers. My pillow from home, Boppy (I did not use it used hospital pillows since it worked better with my c-section) Cell phone, charger, cameras (video and point and shoot) Undies (but I used the mesh ones) Hair ties, brush, comb, Nipple Cream, Laptop or Book (did not use either a whole lot since I was totally exhausted from surgery but I did use it the last day when I was ready to leave the joint)

Baby: Receiving blanket for ride home, a few sleepers (NB and 0-3) Onesies, take home outfit, hats.

DH- He went home nearly every day since he worked while I was in the hospital and when he wasn't he still went home for a time (he cannot just sit around all day) so he just brought up what he needed when he needed it.

The day we took DD home it was nearly 100 degrees outside so she went home in a white onesie instead of her cute take home outfit.

I am sure I am missing something but I just tried to pack the minimal stuff and stuff that would make me feel comfortable

  • I have:

a comfy black nightgown with a wide neck for nursing, yoga pants, comfy sleep nursing bra, nursing cami, a couple tees, a couple pairs of black undies that I won't be upset if they get destroyed, slippers, sleep gear, 2 pairs of boxers, jeans, and a couple tees for H, toiletries for me and H (including nipple cream and a spray for my healing and tender lady parts and my own pads in case I don't like the hospital ones), 2 NB onesies, 2 0-3 month onesies,  swaddling blanket, pacifier, boppy, hat, socks, mittens, camera and charger, charger for my iPod touch, phone charger, and something no one else has mentioned yet -- SNACKS. Some hard candies and starbursts, granola bars and goldfish, and gatorade. The boppy isn't IN the bag, more just sitting next to it, and the snacks are in a separate tote as well.

  • I have three separate bags, but they're all small.

    1) Soft-sided cooler: 2 bottles of my favorite flavors of gatorade, 1 bottle of DH's favorite flavor of PowerAde, 1 bag of trail mix, 1 bag mixed nuts, 2 protein bars for me, 2 protein bars for DH, 2 bags of cookies (for DH).  We will pack up stuff to stay cool when I'm actually in labor (carrots, yogurt, string cheese... all that is for DH, not me, I won't eat once we leave home).  The gatorade is just in case I'm nauseous and need extra electrolytes or flavor to wash out the vomit taste.

    2) Labor bag: a sports bra that hooks in the back (to wear in the birthing tub if I feel like I need clothing at all), swim trunks for DH (for the birthing tub), flip flops for both of us for the shower, toothbrushes and toothpaste for both of us(we keep spares on hand), toiletries for both of us, socks for both of us, a rice sock, the camera/charger, the book from our Natural Birthing class (turned to the page of labor and pushing positions), hair ties, hair bands and bobby pins.  My iPod will be in there soon.

    3) Overnight bag: 2 outfits for baby, a nursing tank, a nursing bra, a shirt for me, comfy pants for me, PJ pants for me, 3 pairs of underwear for me, deoderants (we keep spares on hand), slippers for me, bathrobe for me, an outfit for DH (that he has yet to pack).

I need to make a list of last minute grabs to put with that stuff...  I also need to finish DS1's overnight bag...

  • I have in mine:

    -Cell phone and camera chargers

-Shampoo/Condiitoner/Body Wash/Body lotion in sample sizes (the first shower after you give birth feels like the best shower of your life, so I splurged and got really nice ones from Sephora).

-A comfy sports bra (one for labouring in and one to wear afterwards).

    -Yoga/jogging pants

-Stretchy tank, leggings and a tunic to wear home

-Gatorade and jello (it's all I wanted to eat the last time I was in labour)

    -Slippers (hospital floors are nasty)

-Two of my own pillow cases

    -Nipple cream

    -Toothbrush/deoderant

    -Breath mints/mouthwash/lip balm

    For baby:

-a newborn coming home outfit (a PJ), a wool blanket for the car in case it's chilly, a hat, a swaddling blanket.

  • So I only labored at the hospital for 2 hours before delivering so I didn't end up needing / using my swim suit top (tub labor) or non skid socks (for walking around in) or back massager.

Post delivery, I was glad to have packed some nursing gowns (way better than hospital gowns when having visitors), a nursing bra, slippers, my own soap & shampoo, and other toiletries, my smart phone, and netbook. We also brought a blanket and onesie for him to wear home.

Hospital provided diapers, wipes, some clothing  to wear (though it was too big), receiving blankets, and hats  for him and pads, mesh underwear, tucks pads, peri bottle, and water bottle for me.

Awesome, thanks so much ladies!  I've compiled my list of items, and this weekend I'll actually put things in the bag!  Plus I put a star by the items I use every day, so if something happens and my husband has to finish the bag, he'll know exactly what to get.

We DO only live 1 mile from the hospital, so if I forget something I don't see it as a big deal.
