avoiding crying wolf...

I started having contractions an hour ago...they are about a minute long and not too intense and about 5 mins apart on average.  I just got up to walk around a bit and get some water, now sucking down the water.  What else can I do to test these contractions to see that they aren't real?  I'm going to go home in about an hour and lie down.  Any other suggestions?

Re: avoiding crying wolf...

  • My dr said that if I am getting minute long contractions every five minutes for an hour straight, then i am in active labor and to come to the hospital..

Maybe LO wants to make his/her appearance?

  • Once you get home, get in the bath or a shower.  If it's false labor, the warm relaxing water will often stop them.

  • You are having the 1-5-1 rule.  1 minute long, every 5 minutes, for an hour........sounds like active labor Big Smile

I would at least call your doctor, but they will probably send you to labor and delivery.  Good luck and let us know!

  • We had our first baby class last night and this was one of the things we talked about. Apparently if you go for a walk - like an hour long- and the contractions get worse then it is true labor. If the walking slows/stops the contractions then it is pre-labor.

Apparently if you cannot talk/walk through a contraction it is true labor as well.

    Hope this goes well!

This is what a lot of people will tell you and is true for most.  With DS I went for a walk after dinner and my contractions went from 5 min apart to 9 minutes.  I assumed it was false labor went to bed and my water broke an hour later.  I gave birth an hour after that.  Moral of the story:  Call your doctor.  Go to  Triage/LD and get checked.  Even if it is a false alarm, it's better to get checked.  Some FTM do have fast labors.  GL!

I agree. I was also told the "you won't be able to walk/talk" thing. When I went into labor, I was walking around the house talking to myself to see if it was real labor. I could walk, I could talk, but I was also in (very) active labor. I was 8cm when I got to the hospital because I had spent so much time convincing myself that it wasn't real labor. Definitely call your doctor!

  • I was at L&D on Monday and the nurse taught me the "nose, chin, forehead" trick. If your belly feels like the tip of your nose when you press on it, no contraction. If it feels like the middle of your chin when you press on it, it's a BH. If it feels like your forehead, it's a real contraction. She also said that when you have contractions your whole belly will tighten up and likely move up - kind of like when you flex your stomach muscles.

Of course - that's just a basic guideline. Everyone's labor is different and some have back labor and other situations where they don't act like "normal" labor is expected to.

Other options - warm bath, or walk around/change your activity.

  • Thanks ladies, I went home and took a bath. Had a few more contractions but they've gotten less frequent. I'm hoping to make it through the night and see how u feel in the morning. The dr on call tonight I absolutely want to avoid. So I'm hoping nothing is really going on and I will call the dr in the am if I'm still having contractions. They've pretty much gone away now.
