Pregnant after a Loss

forgot and ate chicken salad, pgal freakout

I was driving around today after my dentist appointment and I hadn't eaten in a while. I got an Arbys Chicken salad sandwich on impulse. I was eating it when my husband got home. He's actually the one that said babe, you can't eat salads like that!! I threw it out right away and only ate 3 or 4 bites but now i'm freaking out that I I might have put my baby at risk for listeria or other complications. Ugh :(

Re: forgot and ate chicken salad, pgal freakout

  • I really wouldn't worry too much-I would think that the risk of complications from a chicken salad sandwich is very small! (especially if it was from somewhere that it most likely was stored at the correct temp.)

Sh!t happens. Try not to worry. I accidentally ate a whole salad topped with bleu cheese thinking it was feta. The last bite I noticed a bit of blue and freaked. The risk of lysteria, while it is there, is pretty low. I'm sure you are doing your best to keep your baby healthy and safe. Accidents will happen. Don't beat yourself up over it.

Yep. As far as I know, there is nothing wrong with this....

  • I've eaten chicken salad tons of times this pg'cy and everything is perfectly fine.  Atlanta Bread Company was a big craving for me and all I would get there was the chicken salad sandwich.  I hate you threw it out, but you're fine to eat it.  Don't freak out.  :)

    Same idea as deli meat.

It's the slicing machines that are the deli meat concern though, so no worries for chicken salad, unless it's been sitting in the sun or something.

  • Chicken salad is fine as far as I know. As long as the chicken is cooked through of course.  Deli meat is what needs to be watched and you can eat that as long as you've heated it to steaming.

That being said- I stille at deli meat from time to time. I did with my healthy DS too.  And I had a ceasar salad at lunch today even though I knwo you're not supposed to have ceasar dressing. I totally ate raw cookie dough a while ago and I know you're not supposed to do that.

You just have to be smart. I would go eating a deli sandwich every day for lunch or start downing raw eggs but I think you're fine!!

  • You have more of a chance of catching listeria from fruits/veggies than you do chicken salad. I have yet to see someone freak out because they ate a carrot.

This. I've been eating chicken salad this whole pregnancy, and my OB never said a word about it.

FoodSafety.gov says for pregnant women to avoid ham salad, chicken salad, and seafood salad as there is risk of listeria.

ETA - that being said, I've still had a lot of chicken salad this pregnancy, I just make sure it's from a trusted deli.

  • Honestly, I eat almost anything in moderation... lunchmeat, eggs that aren't cooked solid, hot dogs. You're not at any higher risk for listeria than you were before you were pregnant. Since its so rare to begin with, I wouldn't worry too much.
  • I'm sure you're fine, though I totally understand the freak out! I've had lunch meat I think three times, always forgetting and realizing after that I'm not supposed to have it cold.

  • Don't freak out.  Listeria is EXTREMELY RARE.  I have no intention of not eating those types of things, especially from a place that is busy and has good turnover of their deli meats/salads.

I have on occasion eaten lunchmeat (though as PPs said, the risk for listeria is REALLY rare) and even sushi. Just make sure it's from a reliable place, and don't do it too often.

I don't remember who was talking about the risk of listeria on fruits and veggies (too lazy to go back and check) but I'd never heard that before! It makes sense to me, I just never thought about it.

Thanks everyone, I figured I was probably fine, it was just a freak out moment. Chicken Salad, ham salad, etc (That isn't home made) and lunch meat (that isn't heated) is on the avoid list for my OB due to listeria, and I've been good about avoiding them. But today I was so hungry and saw the picture and just got it. Afterward, my PGAL brain was just like oh great :P

Silly, I know, but as we all know being PGAL isn't easy.  Thank you all for helping to ease my mind.

Agreed - it's not deli meat...and everything's processed. If that's off limits, then so is anything with mayo!

  • I'm surprised DS didn't come out with feathers and clucking.  I had chicken salad from ChickFilA probably 90% of the days I'm at work, the entire time I was pregnant...no kidding.   He's a perfectly happy and healthy LO (and terribly cute if I say so myself Wink )  If pregnant women didn't eat the things they tell us not to, there wouldn't be anything left!
