MIL wants to do a smash cake

MIL is coming to visit this weekend. She is already being difficult. She won't be here when we celebrate Hannah's birthday and told us that she wants to give Hannah a cake to destroy . We said no, since we were not planning to do it on her birthday and dairy really bothers her belly. Well of course MIL got mad.

We wanted to take Hannah to the zoo while MIL is here. Hannah loves to be outside, and would love the animals. MIL said no. She wants to go to the mall and Bass Pro Shop because we took my dad there.  The mall sucks and MIL is not interested in anything at Bass Pro. DH told her that we could drop her off at the mall while we go to the zoo and of course that made her mad too.

Sorry to vent, I am just so darn tired of dealing with her and she is not even here yet. Advice is welcome. Thanks.

Re: MIL wants to do a smash cake

  • Ugh...MILs.  A few ideas:

    - Could you ask her to make a non-dairy cake?

    - Could you ask her to make something else entirely (something that your LO eats)?  Maybe it would just make your MIL happy to see that??

    - Could you do a quick stop at either the mall or the other place on the way to or from the zoo?

Your MIL is being a little ridiculous though.

  • MIL is being crazy! I would stand firm on the cake smash, if you don't want her having cake that's up to you. She would rather spend her time with LO at the mall rather than the zoo? That is rude that you are hosting her and she is being difficult.

  • Well you just tell your MIL it's Hannah's birthday and you're taking her to the zoo! She's welcome to go or she can stay home, end of discussion!

  • I don't really have an opinion on the others. But our DS actually has multiple food protein allergies, and that includes dairy (although we started WCM recently, but we should see the results within 2 weeks). Either way we had his cake smash photos done the other day and we had the cake made dairy free.  Just saying there are options out there rather than just not doing it all together.

She won't "make" anything other than a huge mess and difficult situations. Everything is about her. She will sneak LO dairy and not really care that she is up screaming all night.

  • the bass pro shop sounds so not my style- i guess if you fish regularly it is fine - but not with a baby

my mother-in-law rubs me the wrong way all the time - she tries way way WAY to hard.  That said, I try to let things roll off of my back - stand your ground, but yield if you can on a few things - that is the best advice I have - it sounds like she will be happier if she feels  she wins out every once and a while - so maybe yes proshop no to mall and cake or something
