Trouble TTC

Can someone please educate me on IUI?

I won't go into full details because I could go on and on but my friend who has PCOS went on injections this past month. Long story short she said she had a trigger shot done the other day and IUI yesterday. I asked her how many mature follicles she had right before the trigger and she said 6. She just sent me a text a few minutes ago saying she had another IUI done again today. I've never heard of this???? Do you really do two in a row? Her husband has S issues. Is that why?

  • Yep - from what I understand they can do "back to back" IUIs where you do one shortly after trigger and then 36 hours later.  6 follies sounds crazy though!

Interesting! I've never heard of this but then again it's all very new to me. I guess it's to increase your chances. I thought 6 was a lot too.

  • Its called back-to-back IUIs - some REs do them and some don't.

6 follicles for an IUI is a lot though!

  • Yep, I did 2 b2b last cycle because on the u/s they noticed I was about to ovulate but hadnt quite yet. I came in the very next day for a 2nd one, and left with BD orders for that night.

Ditto. Back to back IUIs are somewhat common although from what I remember reading they don't really increase your odds all that much. I hope she misunderstood her doc and doesn't really have six follies. Or maybe she has like two mature follies and triggered while four others were immature or something. Triggering with six mature follies is like John and Kate levels of irresponsibility.

I wouldn't be surprised if she misunderstood. I love her to death but she doesn't know a whole lot about this stuff. I don't want to rag on her so I'll just leave it at that.

If it doesn't increase your chances by much then what's the point?

It would really depend on her DX/ if there are any MFI issues whether or not it's worth it from a statistical perspective. Some RE's feel that it's just a better idea to get more sperm in there to increase the odds, etc.

Edited. My RE says this: Should one or two inseminations be done per cycle?

    •     Several studies have addressed this question
    •     Some studies show no improvement in success with 2 inseminations done on sequential days compared to 1 well-timed IUI
    •     Others show higher success if 2 inseminations are done on back to back days
    •     One explanation for the different findings is that if single inseminations are not ideally timed for ovulation, success rates could improve with a double insemination protocol. Then, at least one of the insems might be properly timed.
    •     Most fertility specialists believe that 1 well-timed IUI is sufficient

  • Thanks! That info helps a lot.

  • DebateThis gave you some really great info. My RE never offered back to back IUIs to us, there are ladies on the board who have had success with them though. 6 follicles seems like a lot for an IUI cycle. However, depending on her E2 level and if they are dealing with MFI, that may be why they decided to move forward with it.

  • My RE does B2B IUIs and her feeling is that the more sperm that she can get near the egg around ovulation the better.  Can't hurt (unless you are OOP).

  • I've had 1 B2B IUI.  I'm also covered 100% for IUI's which means $ wasn't an issue.  That being said, I'm still here....UGH!
