Today was my LO's 6 month's appointment for his shots and his regular DR was not in. They got a different DR to see him and I was just shocked at the things she said to me. Here goes...
When he wakes up at night to feed don't feed him.... instead give him 2 ounces of water. Dont feed him at night anymore. "REALLY" ????? What????
Give him tylenol before his shots to help with the pain and fever. Before??? What happened to the recent studies???
Your LO is not turning AND (not or) crawling yet???? Then we have to check on that because he should be turning AND crawling at 6 months. .... My LO just turned 6 months. Lots of LO's have not turned and are not crawling yet.
Give him fruits first not veggies.
Let's just say that everything I have heard not to do today I was told me to do.
oi!
Re: Interesting 6 months appointment
Wow, that's some pretty crazy stuff. Water, really? Also, I was under the impression that crawling wasn't actually a milestone...just being able to get somewhere by some method (crawling, rolling, scooting, army crawl, etc.) and not by 6 months!
What are the recent students about Tylenol before shots? That's the only one you listed that our pedi has mentioned.
ETA: Nevermind, just saw your other post about Tylenol.
For the nighttime feedings, I've read on here about giving water at the middle of the night feeding, but I don't think I'd do it. DS still gets up once to eat in the middle of the night and I feed him because he usually drains the whole 6 oz bottle, so I know that he is actually hungry. I've read some places that when they start only eating a couple oz is when you should stop the middle of the night feeding and babies will sleep through the night when they are ready.
Granted, I don't *usually* have a baby that wakes a lot at night. Typically once to eat and rarely more than that to be soothed. He usually soothes himself back to sleep after I put him back in his crib. And I feel very lucky, I haven't had to do any sleep training to get him down to once a night and I don't think I'll need to sleep train him to drop that either. In fact, last night DS slept from 8:30 PM until 6 AM. So I will wait until he shows me he is ready.
Like PP said, maybe this doctor is older and outdated? Who knows, I'm a firm believer in following your own babies cues.

I would take all that advice with a grain.
My son typically wakes 1-2 times in a 12 hour period. Does he NEED to BF then? Who knows. I just do it. He barely wakes, he eats efficently, and goes back to bed w/o an issue. No big deal. I don't care if it's "normal" or not, it doesn't bother me. Would I like to sleep more? Sure. Not enough to make him lay there and cry, though.
My son is sitting only in the last week, for up to 5 minutes at a time. No crawling, and really he doesn't roll over. He can't figure out what to do with that arm, ha ha.

I have heard the first two. The crawling one kills me. My LO is 7 months old and wants to crawl sl bad but he hasn't gotten past kicking on his belly.
As for the water, I think that completely depends on your baby. If you have a baby that's still waking up for a certain feeding, I would continue doing that bc they will eventually drop it.
My LO on the other hand was STTN and has gone back to waking several times (he gets plenty to eat before he goes down). I've thought about trying the water bc I don't think he is hungry, but waking out of habit.
We've been giving our LO tylenol before his shots per the advice of the pedi. I honestly don't see anything wrong with it but it's your decision. It seems to help him and keep him comfortable after the shots are administered.
I've also heard about the water thing. Right now LO wakes once to eat during the night and he really does eat, then goes right back to sleep. It doesn't bother me that much and I don't lose too much sleep so I think we'll just keep it the way it is for now. I'm afraid if we tried the water that he wouldn't be satisfied (since I nurse him) and he would just cry until he got milk.
My LO isn't anywhere close to crawling and that's fine with me. If you're really upset about it you can always call your usual pedi and see if their opinion is the same. Every doctor is different.
Um, I don't go 12 hours without eating...how can I expect my infant son to?
can someone post a link to the tylenol thread or article? i was given that advice by a mom of four, although i haven't taken it yet. i was planning to give him a little tylenol before his six month shots later this month.
haven't heard any of those other things, but obv if you're uncomfortable with the things the pedi is telling you, just make sure you don't see that one anymore, and discuss with your regular pedi on your next visit (or call?) .
Just putting this out there that my LO usually sttn for between 10 and 12 hours without waking to eat and she is just fine. She is not starved or anything and when she gets her first bottle of the day, she only drinks about four oz.
I am not saying that it is something to expect, but it can happen
Same here. My DD usually sleeps 11 hours straight. And I often go 12 hours between eating dinner and breakfast. And I also don't eat every 3 hours during the day like a baby. But I will add that if she *does* wake in the middle of the night and won't go right back to sleep, I absolutely do feed her .

I wasn't saying that. DS has STTN 12 hours before. I was just saying that you can't expect it. Babies that STTN at young ages are the exceptions, not the rules.
This. My LO has been STTN since a little before 3 months. When she wakes up she doesn't seem starving to death. SOmetimes she will wake up in the middle of the night and I tried to put her back to sleep, but I feed her if she doesn't.
