TV in LOs room?

Does anyone have a TV in LO's room? If no, when do you plan on allowing LO to get a TV?

Right now, neither of my boys have a TV in their room. I don't think it's necessary. I'm not against TV by any means, but I dont think thye need one until they are older.

This is something DH and I can't agree on.  I didn't have a TV in my room until I went to college and had a super small one in my dorm room.  We also only had one TV in the house growing up so I either watched what my parents were watching or didn't watch.  He had one from the time he can remember, including whatever video game console was "in" at the time. I say not until they are teenagers at least, but its a discussion that is ongoing and will probably be made somewhat on the fly.

  • I think I got a TV in my room when I was around 10. My grandparents got them for us for Christmas. So, if I was 10, my brother would have been about 6 or 7. I think 10 is probably reasonable, if DD really begged for it. I don't know, I spent a lot of time in my room reading as a kid. I would obviously prefer her do that, but with all the technology, I know that is just not going to be the case.
  • No, and hopefully never. I don't want it to ever cause a problem with her sleep. I remember being a kid, and constantly sneaking out of bed to turn the tv on all night long.

I don't know for sure, I'll definitely have to see what type of kid she is. I don't want her to be constantly watching tv.

  • I hope never as well. Growing up, there were more TVs in our house than people. When I go back there, the one in the living room is always on, sometimes more than that. It's a huge distraction and I don't want our house to be that way. We don't have cable anyway and don't plan on ever getting it. My parents bought me a TV probably before I was ten. It was white and everyone thought it was a computer, haha!

  • Not for a long time. I don't want to say never, but I also am thinking at least not until age 10 /middle school. I don't have a TV in my bedroom, and I really don't see the point.

  • Dh and I don't even have a tv in our room.

There is one in the family room, in the basement (man cave), and I'll put one in the kids' playroom. That's more than enough tvs for one household.

  • Nope, no tv's in bedrooms at our house. Bad for sleep hygiene, and we don't like tv anyway. Our tv doesn't have any channels; it's hooked up through an HDMI port to a computer. We watch maybe 1 episode of something on netflix a day, and other than that we use it to look at pictures, surf online, or play Pandora. I don't want tv to be any big part of DD's life.

  • No tv for any of them until high school at least, if I had to choose though Id give them one in middle school over a cell phone. We only have 2 tvs hooked up right now, Id consider one in the basement for a playroom area though.

I don't see the need anytime soon.  We have TVs in the living room, our room (which rarely gets used) and the rec room in the basement.

I figure until he is older, he definitely will not have the need to have one in his room.

  • Nope.

Never if I have my way. :)

We're just not big tv watchers by nature (I have nothing against it all..mainly boils down to the fact H and I have no attention span at all...lol). I hope my kids are the same way.

We have 3 tvs in the house (upstairs LR, basement family room and our room). The LR one is on at night for a bit, the basement one, when I'm on the treadmill or we have guests (it's right off both guest rooms) and the one in our room for the news before I get dressed for work.

Although..right now I'm at the point I wish LO was remotely interested in tv..lol. Somedays I need her to like 20 minutes of Sesame Street. :)

  • Most likely never.  We only have two in the house. 1 in the Living room, one in the family room that is pretty much only used for exercise videos.  My brother just made a playroom for his DS (2.5) and they put a TV in there . . . now all he does is lay on the floor and watch TV :-( I'm not completely against TV, but I think we've become too dependent on it.

  • I got a 13" TV for my 13th birthday (my parents were cheesy, guess what I got for my 10th birthday -- a 10 speed bike).  But I didn't have cable in my room, just the basic cable channels.

My nephew got one at 8, so he could have quiet movie time in his room since there's a 2 year old all up in his business all day, but it's very limited.  I guess I could see that.

Out plan is to have LO spending time outside playing or playing period than watching TV.  That's how DH and I were both raised that way (outside after breakfast, and inside when the streetlights came on!).
