Latch Weight Limit in Rav4

We have a Britax Frontier.  I have it installed with the LATCH.  I prefer this over the belt because I feel like I have less room for error.  I just read that the LATCH has weight limits depending on car type.  I also read that Toyota defers to the car seat maker.  Britax says to assume 40lbs if not specified.

I have no idea how much DS weighs. (I know mother of the year.) I will weigh him later today.  My guess is that he will be over 40lbs.  Is it really safer to put him in with a belt restraint over the latch at this point?

My car doesn't have the latch system.  I always used seatbelts and I was concerned about the safety aspect.  I work in crash reconstruction and know people who work in car seat safety.  I asked them about the seatbelt vs. latch system.  All said the same thing- latch and seatbelt are the same for safety.  The difference is that the latch is easier to use to people get the right fit.  It is all about the right installation.  So it's totally safe to use the seatbelt - as long as you install it properly.  That's why people just like the latch- they feel more secure that it's done right.  But I've never had a problem with the seatbelt- it just is an effort to put the seat in and out (to clean or to travel).  It shouldn't move more than an inch when installed.  There should be no seatbelt slack, etc.  So read the instructions and if you're worried, have a car seat professional inspect it - some states have police who are certified, others have the Dept. of Transportation do it.  But every place is free - so just google your local area- they will show you how to installi it using the seatbelt.

Thanks ladies.  I guess my question was a bit vague.  I was looking for feedback regarding  the 40lb weight limit which seems on the lower end.  Seems like Toyota and Britax are being conservative.  Which is fine, I'll change to the belt.

Oh my goodness!  I had NO IDEA, and I feel like I'm usually pretty up to speed on carseat stuff.  DS is over 50lbs, and I still have him in his Britax Frontier using the LATCH.  I've got to change that asap!
