Success after IF

WWSAIF do?

We did 2 clomid IUIs before moving onto IVF. The clomid either wasn't strong enough or produced a really thin lining. The RE had suggested skipping over using injects +IUI and moving right to IVF (b/c of my insurance only allows 5 IUI/IVF/FET combos and we didn't think IVF would work after 1 try).

We have been trying on our own (insert laugh) since we got the "go ahead" at 8 weeks. We will probably go back to the RE in the fall. Should we just do IVF again, since that is what worked last time or see if the injects + IUI works? Part of me wants to attempt the IUI (for $$ reasons) but then the other part thinks that we should just do what worked before. Maybe the inject drugs is what I needed since I obv. used injects with the IVF?

During my IVF cycle, I had an AFC of over 30, they retrieved only 12 eggs (didn't say how many were mature) & only 5 fertilized. We have no snow babies because 2 couldn't make it past day 1, they transferred 2 to me and the other 2 didn't make it to the day 5 "freeze day." So, this makes me think that I may have an egg quality issue....which is why I'm thinking that the IUI would just be a waste of time/$$.

Any thoughts?

That's what I thought Smile I was hoping that someone would say that the less invasive option may work but I wasn't holding my breath. If we go back to IVF, we won't be going to the RE for a while. The emotional/physical aspect of it still kind of haunts me so I am not ready to do all the shots/what-not again just yet.

  • Okay, I'll be the lone voice saying maybe try the IUI.  I did six clomid cycles with just timed intercourse before doing two clomid IUI cycles.  After the second IUI didn't work we moved into IVF, mainly because our insurance at the time covered IVF and I knew I'd probably only have that insurance for one year.  Anyway, the IVF worked and gave us our daughter.

Two years later we no longer had insurance that covered IVF and so we decided to go back to IUIs.  I did one using Femara and then did a second using a combination of Femara and Follistim which worked and gave us our youngest son.  For me, the entire process of IUI was less stressful and far less expensive.  Also, we have one frozen embryo from our IVF and I was concerned about doing another IVF and possibly creating more embryos that I then would feel obligated to use.  My response to the IUI drugs was as such that I really only developed two good follicles so high order multiples wasn't an issue (or having to cancel a cycle).

If your insurance will cover the IVF I agree that might be the better option, specially if more IUIs may mean less chances at another IVF, but I wanted to give you a story of how going back to IUI can also work sometimes.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I don't have any experience with IUI (our RE never recommended it for our IF issues), but I would have to agree with the majority of PPs and suggest moving straight to IVF, especially if your insurance allows for a set number of IUI and IVF cycles.

FWIW, I am newly diagnosed with DOR (wasn't part of our original dx) and we are moving straight to IVF for a fresh cycle in August. We only had 5 eggs retreived during our previous cycle (4 mature, 3 fertilized normally w/ICSI, 2 transferred on day 3, and 1 that didn't make it to freeze). That cycle brought us DS, and although I am not exactly thrilled that our upcoming cycle may be even more challenging given my body's current suckiness, we are hopeful that it will work for us again. We have insurance coverage for IVF right now, so we feel like now is the time.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • Has your doc mentioned Femara instead of Clomid?  While I didn't get pregnant (MF issues), our cycles with femara were much better than clomid in terms of lining and follicle production -- with clomid, I had to be on such a high dose for any follicle stimulation, and by that point, my lining was crap. Just a thought!
