HELP! (sleep related)

hi ladies - hope everyone had a great mother's day!! I need help.... My daughter is going on a few days of waking up between 4:15 AM - 4:30 AM. Crying, hard. I try waiting a few minutes, I try rocking her, nothing works. She's just up. Now granted, she goes to sleep at 7 PM but we were on a solid 5:30 - 6:30 AM wake up (5:30 sucked, now i'm missing it - ha) - I don't know what the deal is? She's also not napping as long as normal (she naps twice a day, usually 1-2 hours each but both naps the past few days were no longer then an hour). I'm at a loss. Is it teething? Possibly. I'm just so sleepy. AND I'm freaking out about giving up the bottles, switching to milk, and everything else that comes with turning 1 year old. I think I'm having a mommy meltdown due to lack of sleep, haha. Any help?

Re: HELP! (sleep related)

  • That's rough! I would have suggested waiting 10-15min, but sounds like that doesn't work. Maybe she's hungry? Also, is there a way to change her bedtime to 8? My DD wakes up around 4am too. I feed her and she goes back to bed till 6-7. Could she be hungry? Maybe a growth spurt? I know they technically don't need food overnight by this age, but you never know...

  • I would love to push her bedtime to 8:00 - she's been going to bed at 7 since the age of 4 months - everytime we've tried to push it back, she goes bananas. she's so sleepy by 7... last night she was wide away so we managed to keep her awake until 7:15.

She hasn't needed to eat in the middle of the night in months but she does seem to be really hungry at that time so maybe it's a growth spurt? I thought it was teething related but maybe it's not?

Everytime I figure it out, she switches it up on me haha.

We also weaned from nursing about 2 weeks ago so maybe she's adjusting to that?

Thanks for the advice and support :)

  • I could have written this post myself!  DS is doing the exact same thing.  We, too, are weaning from BM to WCM, but nurse at night and when he wakes up.  We have tried letting him go, but he will cry and cry.  He just cut a bunch of teeth, but seems to be over that hurdle.  He goes to bed between 7-7:30 and was sleeping until 5:30-6.  I agree with you that if I kept him awake any later than 7:30, he is a bear!  He also takes two naps a day.  So, I have no real advice, but wanted to say that am in the same boat.  A friend of mine actually suggested trying to get him to bed before 7 and seeing if that helps, but I am not sure that will work with getting home from work, making dinner, eating, etc.  I thought we had the sleep thing down!

  • I'm so sorry you're going through the same thing -- for some reason, it makes me feel better to know I'm not alone. I literally cried in bed at 4:30 AM like a crazy person because I'm just so sleepy. My amazing husband took the baby downstairs so I could sleep until my alarm went off at 5:45 -

I reallllly thought we had the sleep thing down too!!

I was hoping to move her bedtime back later but I may try an earlier bedtime and see if that helps. 6:30 seems insane to me but I'll try anything, haha!

  • What kind of blinds do you have on the windows?  I have to get room darkening ones because DD has been waking up earlier since the sun comes up earlier now.  I know at 4:30 it's not really sunny, but here it's just starting to get a tiny bit light and the birds are chirping.  Maybe she's between sleep cycles and notices the difference in light and decides it time to get up.

DD was sleeping until 7 which was idea and now wakes between 6 and 6:30, I know I'm really lucky, but that extra time makes all the difference.

  • We have the room darkening shades :(

    I'm so perplexed.

    Thank you ladies!!
