STM's who've BF

What kinds of things do I need to buy? I have no idea...I'm clueless. I have most everything for pumping, but if you'd like, you can include that stuff, as well.

Re: STM's who've BF

  • It depends on *how* you plan on doing it.

I used a boppy every day. Love that thing.  I used a receiving blanket for a nursing cover when nip.  I'll probably get/make a cover with a strap that goes around the neck this time around.

I never really needed breast pads but a lot of women do.  They make cloth reuseable ones that are probably a lot more breathable than the icky pad like ones.

I never used nursing clothes.  Just wore a tank under everything and pulled shirt up, tank and bra down so that I didn't expose my tum.

It can be very very simple if you let it!  GL.

    1. Nursing pads. Disposable will hold more, but I've heard cloth can help your body learn when to stop leaking. I used disposable the first several months, and I leaked a lot. I don't know if it was just timing, but when I switched to cloth I stopped leaking and was able to eventually not use any. I plan to try cloth from the start this time to see if it's true.

    2. Good long nursing tanks. If you have a good long tank top on, you can wear almost any shirt (that you can lift up) to nurse and have full coverage and no skin showing. I wasn't a fan of the nursing shirts that pulled down because it showed a lot of skin when NIP. My son hated anything over his head, so NIP can be very discrete when you have a shirt that goes up and a tank that goes down.

Bottles, pump, and pacifiers. I can't think of anything else. Maybe a good blanket or cover.

I always used my boppy at home.  Couldn't live without my lanolin and my breast pads.  I used cloth ones at night and disposables during the day.  Otherwise I always had a circle pad shape showing through my shirts. lol.

  • Get some freezer bags for what you pump.  I used the Lasinoh brand ones from Walmart.

Bookmark kellymom.com on your computer.  ;)  You'll need it at one point or another!

Lanolin cream for your nipples in the first week or so.

I used a boppy all the time.  I needed support under my arms and that worked well.

I have a few nursing covers for NIP or nursing just at the house when we have guests.  I

I agree with PP.  I used nursing tanks and just pulled up my shirt since the tank would cover my belly.  I liked the tanks better than the bras for that reason.  I didn't want my belly exposed.  So I didn't buy many nursing clothes.

That's really it.  I got the book "So that's what they're for!" and used it frequently.  I also took it to the hospital with me with DD1 to help learn to latch.  It had great pictures and a fantastic index to help look specific questions up.  :)  GL!

ETA:  Breast pads!  I liked the Lasinoh brand from Walmart.  They were disposable.  They were large enough that I didn't have a round bulge of the pad around my nipple...lol.

  • For us big breasted girls, a nice nursing tank/shirt/dress/bras. We cant easily whip put DDD+ boobs without someone noticing. Breast pads, a boppy or a good pillow, nip cream, and (till you get the hang of it) nursing cover/thin blanket.

  • Am I going to need nursing bras? How many do you recommend?

  • Breast pads!  I needed them around the clock for the first few months, and breast pads at night until LO was 9 months or so.  I loved the disposable Lansinoh ones early on when I was regulating my supply and leaking a lot.  I was able to switch to homemade cloth ones after a little while when the leaking decreased.

Lanolin was really helpful early on when I was so sore and getting used to nursing.

I can't recommend reading a few books on breastfeeding enough!  They were so much more worthwhile than the books I read about pregnancy.  I also recommend meeting with a lactation consultant early on, because they can catch any latching issues, etc. before pain and supply issues result.  My son was tongue-tied, and luckily, the lactation consultant who was also the nurse attending our birth mentioned it to me as soon as she saw his mouth.  She was able to recommend a good ENT for a frenotomy (tongue clipping), and I was able to get that problem solved before I was in too much pain, and with no impact on my supply or his latch.

  • The Medela nipple cream was my favorite (and I tried a ton of different ones).

    Storage bags for pumped milk.

Breast pads...try a few different brands if you don't love the first kind you get.

    A LARGE nursing cover.

A Boppy or Breast Friend type of pillow.

I used a combo of nursing tanks, bras and sleeping bras. Get a sleeping bra or two for the hospital...then, when your milk comes in go get measured and fitted for a few nursing bras...I had 3-4 of those and just washed frequently. (I did find that I got what I paid for and the pricier ones were more comfortable for the long haul and lasted 9-12 months...where the cheapy ones fell apart on me and made my back ache.)

If you don't have a hands free pump, get a hands free bra so you can multi-task when pumping....and by multi-task I mean playing on your phone, reading, etc...not washing the car, mowing the lawn, etc. ;)

  • NURSING PILLOW! I didn't think I'd need it, but in the hospital (and even at home), it was SO hard to position DD correctly. Plus, it's awesome to prop baby up when you start solids later on. Boppy brand pillows were too pricey to me so I bought one from Walmart for under $20.

Nipple Cream. Start using it BEFORE you actually need it... I couldn't have BF without it... DD was a hoover and literally sucked the skin off my nipples before I started using the cream. Find a kind you don't have to wipe off before you nurse.

Nursing Pads. I liked the disposables just because I went through so many and never would have been able to afford a big enough stash of washables. I had to change mine at every feeding because both breasts would drip when I nursed.

Cloth Diapers. They're a cheap nursing cloth and are more absorbent than anything else I've found.

Shelf tanks. They're cheaper than most nursing tanks and the shelf bra holds your nursing pads in place at night. These also eliminate the need for wearing a bra at home (which I was NOT into). I'd probably still buy a couple nursing bras for wearing out and about as I wouldn't want to risk a possible leak-through lol

Some kind of timer. Those first few weeks are a blur and keeping track of hours between nursing and diaper changes is difficult. They have a baby care timer on Amazon that I'm thinking of buying this go round. I used a journal last time and I always forgot to write it down... or just figured I'd remember. Pushing a button (especially in the middle of the night) seems so much easier.

  • Other than a baby and your boobs, you don't need anything!!  Haha, but seriously, nursing is soo much easier/simpler than pumping.  You'll probably want nursing pads, some kind of pillow to rest the baby on while you nurse, lanolin, and a nursing cover/blanket if you want to use it while NIP.  And, obviously, anything else that you need for your pump.
  • Thanks, SOOOO MUCH ladies! I'm getting excited and empowered about doing this, this time around. I wish I could say "I can't wait til she gets here!" But...honestly, we are so not ready for her. Poor baby. By this time with DS we had everything ready.

  • Just your boobies!

Don't buy too many nursing bras or tops until you see what works for you.  You may find that a simple camisole or tank under most of your regular clothes works just fine.  I never used a nursing bra, just discreetly slipped myself out of the top of my bra and tucked it under my boob while feeding.

Nursing bra/tanks--although I only wore the tanks in the beginning when my belly was still big.

Boppy or My Brest Friend pillow

Breast pads--I really liked the Lily Padz a lot.  They don't absorb milk but are more of a blocker so milk doesn't come out.  Reusable and they don't show under even unlined bras.

I had some breastfeeding clothes which were nice in the beginning but not really necessary

Hand pump for relieving engorgement or if you have oversupply to pump a little before feeding so you don't overwhelm baby

I used a bracelet to remind me which side I started on last so I could alternate sides.  Hard to remember, especially in the beginning

PJs that give easy boob access if you want to nurse lying down in bed

I forgot to add--an iphone or something easily portable to occupy you!  I often had marathon nursing sessions, ending up with DS sleeping on my lap.  It was great to have something to do while I was stuck.

  • I say avoid disposable breast pads because they don't breath properly and you can end up with thrush.  After about 4 months DS and 1 had thrush off and on for 4 months. So air dry your nips as much as possible and don't eat too much sugar because thrush sucks hardcore.

I also like soothies or whatever brand of the cooling packs that you put on your nips.

  • the only things i used were a pump with supplies, breast pads, and a boppy.  i bought Lanolin but never used it bc they gave me better stuff in the hospital.  i also got a nipple shield that collected dust.  i wouldn't buy too much bc chances are you won't need much.  and if you need something, then go out and buy it.  i totally over purchased things with my first bc i wanted to be prepared, but just ended up wasting a lot of money.

  • I'm a FTM, but worked in maternity for many years!  A lot of our patients loved the lansinoh soothies.  Not everyone will need them, but I plan on having some on hand just in case!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Bravado nursing bras.  I went to a store that specializes in nursing supplies and tried on several styles. The Bravado were hands-down my favorite - very supportive and comfortable. I nursed/pumped for 1 year with DD, so it was well worth the investment. I got 3 wireless and 1 or 2 with wire for later on.  Loved the nursing tanks that others have mentioned, too. Pretty much lived in those.

They suggest you get fitted during your 8th or 9th month of pregnancy to get an idea of size.

  • Nighttime nursing bra like this: https://www.motherhood.com/Product.asp?Product_Id=975400120&MasterCategory_Id=MC13

While it doesn't look overly supportive my boobs were large (DD) and FULL and this was great for right after delivery and at night.  I did use a real nursing bra during day under clothes and at some point just bent my normal bras back.

Boppy and/or My BreastFriend to save your back

I made lots of milk so needed to wear the pads in my bra since they would leak but lots of my friends didn't so I'd have a few on hand but not buy a lot until you know your milk supply.

I had to use a nipple shield with my first and had a dog who like to snatch them from the table so I went through about 4-5 of those  while I had to use them in the first 6 weeks until he could latch without it.

  • boppy. nursing pads. lansinoh. storage bags. sterile wipes for my pump. nursing bra and tanks. and a burp cloth.
