Ear piercing for girls

I'm not looking to start a debate. I just want to know if anyone else has pierced the ears already or will do so in the next 2 years or so.

I mentioned it in passing to my ILs that I'd like to get DD's ear's pierced once I find a reputable place to do it (her pediatrician's office doesn't do it). They acted horrified. I thought we agreed to disagree and a few days later MIL texts DH to say he needs to talk me out of it. It's not their place to butt in. I wouldn't have an issue if they directly talked to me about it.

Re: Ear piercing for girls

  • We're not (we'll let her decide when she's older) but have the opposite problem, my MIL is dying to take her and get it done, which isn't happening period.  DD will go with me when she's older.

  • Haha! Want to swap MILs for a day? I'll take your MIL to get DD's ears pierced. I totally agree with you that it's your call if and when to get them done.

  • I got both my daughters ear pierced at about 3 months. I have not had any problems with infections or them pulling at the earrings and Alexis likes her ears.  When I lived in Canada I had my older daughters pierced at the hair dressers, for Alexis I went to Merle Norman's (spelling). Our Pedi doesn't do it either, and tattoo/piercing shops don't allow anyone under 18 inside.

I'm sorry you have to deal with you MIL.

We got DDs done at 8 months.  I had mine at 6 months and always knew I would get my girls' done (if I had any) at a young age.  I wanted to have the sole responsibility of taking care of them and not worrying whether it was getting done properly or not.  I like that I have never had issues with mine.  I also feel bad for little girls who ask to get it done and then have to wait 8 weeks to change them out.  8 weeks is forever to a little girl, although I know this reason is not for everyone....

My MIL and FIL kept asking DH if we were sure we wanted to do it.  And MIL wouldn't lay up for awhile.  We were supposed to do it at 6 months but it got postponed and I think MIL thought I wasn't doing it anymore so she let up.  Once it was done she kept saying how cute they were and had to call everyone and tell them about it.  I really think she was still irritated and wanted to gossip about it and get others reactions but what ev.   Honestly as bad as it sounds knowing MIL was against it made me want to do it all the more. :)

If you have any questions on it let me know!

  • We definitely are not anytime in the near future. I yhink this topic, brought up several times ovrr the last year, was most recently discussed just last week. It wouldn't hurt to go back a few pages and find it because there were some really grest responses as to why some aren't...including someone who has an older daughter who hates that her mom had her ears pierced.

  • We're not, but I know a few babies who have their ears pierced or are going to soon. I don't want to get DD's yet since I have had so many issues with infections (still to this day they are a problem on and off) so I don't want to start that with DD if its in my genes. But it is common to get babies ears pierced, I get asked when I am going to get DD's ears pierced ALL THE TIME - so it is strange that your ILs are horrified. Don't let them make you feel bad about it.

  • We did it 10 weeks. She. Cried less than she did at her 8 week shots and stopped before leaving the store.  I messed with mine when I had them done as a kid and they got infected. At least as a baby I can care for them correctly to avoid that.
  • We are and having been meaning to for the longest time but it just keeps getting postponed. I had mine pierced when I was around 3 months I believe. When MIL heard that I wanted to get them done she was like "oh you're not going to let her make her own decision when she's older? That's why I did with my girls." I told her "no I am making the decision for her" and of course she didn't drop it and months later somehow it came up again and she continued to complain about us not waiting and letting her choose. Ugh it is no one else's decision but mine and DH's I don't know why grandparents think they have some say. They don't!

Sorry you have to deal with that.

  • Thanks ladies! I feel like this is such a silly thing to have a fight over. As parents we deal with so much that having grandparents undermine and critique everything makes it all the more stressful.

They're very supportive otherwise. Just recently told me how good of a mother I am. Well, then trust that I will take care of her. If it was life and death, by all means butt in, but it's not. Last night MIL said it's not our decision to make...umm...she circumcised DH and that's not exactly a necessity either. He doesn't resent her for it. She made the best decision she could at the time. Thanks for letting me vent. Sorry for bringing up a topic that has already been discussed. I must have missed it.

We had Sophie's done when she was 3 months old, done at Claire's.

She cried from the time it took me to get her from my lap to my shoulder, and put a pacifier in, so a whole 15 seconds tops?

Shes still living, and doing well
