BITING!!! i dont know what to do!!!

My 5 month old has his two bottom teeth and two top teeth in. which is cute and all, until he bites my boob! omg it hurts sooo bad! last night was the worst. baby c for some reason thought it would be awesome to wake up at 3am. well i went to feed him from one boob, he bit me. tried again, bit me harder. switched to the other side, bit me again! i was in tears!! he was crying and so was i! iv tried flicking his cheek, yelping. but he keeps biting.

is he weaning himself? he cant fall asleep at night to go to bed without me (my boob) which is my fault i know. he has had rice cereal a few times and loved loved loved it! so what should i do? i want to nurse him for a lot longer, but i cant keep up with this biting! my life flashed before my eyes!

  • Say no loudly and put him down. My DS eventually got the hint after a couple days.

say "no biting" and end the session. start again in a few minutes if he is still hungry. he'll figure it out pretty quick.

  • Is he biting while trying to latch or is it actually while he's sucking?  My LO had 2 teeth at 5 mo and 4 teeth by 6 mo and usu bit as he was latching on or if he started to fall asleep while nursing and started to slide off.  For latching I put my finger on his chin and kind of controlled the closing of his mouth so he couldn't bite.  This seemed to help.  As the PP said, if he happened to bite while nursing, I said 'No biting' pretty loudly and immediately unlatched him.  I gave him about 30 sec and then would try nursing again.

  • Babies can't bit while actively sucking, so taking them off when they get sleepy helps with this.  They bite down to try to get more milk to come out and when they're teething.  I was always ready with a finger to break the suction too.  Once i started taking DD off after she stopped actively sucking the biting stopped.
