Birthday cake vs cupcake vs smash cake.

I'm not sure what to do about cake for Indys party which is less than a month away now. 

My SIL owns a CUPCAKE WARS wining bakery and said she will make whatever I want but I'm not sure if I should do a cupcake for him to smash or a small cake for him and cupcakes for everyone else.

What are you doing??

    We are doing cupcakes for everyone to eat.  I am also getting a small 6-8 inch round decorated with "Happy 1st Birthday Olivia" and then a 4-6 inch cake for her to smash. 

    I dont want to get super expensive with the cake, so we chose cupcakes a the majority of the order.

    I am doing a small cake in the shape of a whale for her, and then a cake for everyone else (well, a two tiered cake with two different flavors). Hopefully some of my more creative friends and family will be able to help!

    My friend had her DS smash a Costco cupcake. It's a lot bigger than a regular cupcake, but way cheaper than a smash cake. :)

    We did 3 cakes.  1 7" smash cake, 12 cupcakes, and 1 10" cake. 

    The smash cake was free (a thing they do at the grocery store here).  It worked out great!  We had too much cake, but sent the cupcakes home with the families that had kids.  They were happy.  

    If I had someone who would make awesome cupcakes for me, I'd do cupcakes from them and get a tower or something to make it look cute.

    At this point I think I'll make DS a cupcake that we'll give him on his actual birthday and skip the cake altogether at the "party".  We are trying to do a low key BBQ that people can just stop by and visit whenever, so I'd like to avoid the whole cake time (plus I don't want to make cake for 40+ people and we went for the awesome bakery cake for his christening).

    If I had a free pass to a great bakery, I'd go for a cupcake for DS and then some type of cool cake in a truck shape or something for everyone to admire (and eat of course)

    I plan on a smash cake for LO and I'll probably make it myself.  I'll order a cake for everyone else though.

    6-inch smash cake for LO, and either cake/cupcakes for everyone else. 

    Lets face it, the smash cake is for photos. You need something big enough to show up on film, and not too small that they can pick it up and fling it without ever smashing it.

    For DD I did cupcakes all around and she had plenty of cake to smash with just her single cupcake. I think i will do the same for DS. Maybe a jumbo cupcake (like Costco muffin size?) just so it can be extra decorative/special.
