Anyone's LO on Melatonin?

What are your experiences with it?

I've never put my LO on melatonin, but I've had some experience with its use. It was recommended to DH and me to use to overcome jetlag.

Ifound out, however, that taking melatonin too much can cause  your body to stop producing it naturally.

Why does your LO need it?

My older DD has been prescribed to take it from her doc who handles all of her ADHD stuff - it is very common with kids who are on ADHD meds.  It works amazingly well for us.  We give her a small dose about 30 mins before bed and she then sleeps so much better.  She can fight it if she is really active but it really helps her settle her mind down which then allows her to sleep.  She has been taking it at night since Sept.  My nephew who also has ADHD and is now 17 has been taking it for years.

  • Yes, my LO has been prescribed it by his pedi.  We have tried everything in the book to settle him down at night.  He won't fall asleep until midnight and refuses to nap.  We do a consistant routine, books, warm milk, honey, baths, "monster spray", lying down with him, sticker charts, Tot Clock, dream catcher, him screaming it out which leads to him throwing up and the list just goes on and on.  My family has commented on how he acts differently during the day and has bags under his eyes because he is EXHAUSTED!!  He has taken about 2 mg the past couple of nights and it has been awesome. He is finally sleeping. I just wanted to know if anyone else is using it long term and if there are any side affects.

  • My cousin's 5 year old son takes it and has been for about a year or two now. According to my cousin, her son does sleep better since he's started taking it.  I don't think he's been officially diagnosed as ADHD but from what I remember her telling me, his doctor does see where he exhibits strong ADHD characteristics.
