C-sections

Csection and GD

I'll be having a scheduled csection due to large and breech baby. I'm 36 weeks now and trying to read up as much as possible about the procedure and recovery. How soon were you able to eat, and did you still need to watch your carbs in the hospital? Did they monitor your blood sugar? Did they do anything different for you in the hospital because of your GD? Thanks!

Re: Csection and GD

  • I never heard a thing about GD again after I had the baby except her sugar was a bit low and they gave her something in the NICU via syringe for it.

  • The nurses had absolutely no concern for my blood sugar after my c section. I kept asking them if it was ok to eat what they brought me and they looked at me like I was crazy for even worrying about it. I still wish it was monitored.

You aren't able to eat solids for a while, I think 24 hours. Once I was back on solids they checked my sugar post meals for the first few meals. My blood sugars were still slightly high, so they put me on the diabetes diet for my trays. They told me to try normal foods once i got home and check my sugars. By that point, they were normal, but I still have to retake the 2 hour glucose test at 6 weeks pp. I was not insulin dependent and was totally diet controlled.

  • I ended up with an emergency csection because of LO heart rate dropping during labor, not because of his size.  I couldn't eat until I passed gas...my piece of advise, if this is the case for you and your allowed to order a liquid diet, DO IT!!!  I thought it was so silly to order the liquid diet because that's not FOOD!  Let me just say, I couldn't eat after midnight, planned induction had to be at the hospital @ 6am, he wasn't born 'til 4:36...I didn't get to eat until like 3 or 4pm the next day because I couldn't pass gas.  Back to the liquid diet...I finally got annoyed with having nothing and ordered the liquid diet, within 30 minutes of drinking the broth and drinking something other than water, it happened.  I was so mad that I hadn't ordered it before then...again, ORDER IT, it's just liquid but it helps!  After I had him, they checked my BS once, I think, after I had him, that night.  My doctor told me she was giving me some "free time" to eat what I wanted but not over do it.  I ordered and ate what I wanted.  I had to do the 4hr test again at 6 weeks post partum, but was off all meds and ate what I wanted.  My doctor did have me check my sugars, even though I was on no meds, just at random.  It didn't have to be anything regular, but just to keep an eye on it and if anything looked concerning give her a call.

  • I got my blood sugar checked when I checked in for my csection but then never again while in the hospital. They did 3 checks on my DD and all came back good. My next check for blood sugar will not be until 3 mths PP. As far as diet is concerned. I could not eat until they started hearing bowel movement. I was allowed a  liquid diet the first night. To be honest, I wasn't even hungry. The next morning they allowed me a breakfast but I couldn't eat it. The pain meds made me too nauseous. They got me switched over to ibuprofen from the narcotics and then from there on I was able to eat normal...so by mid day on day 2. I suggest asking for stool softeners. It helped alot. I am still taking them along with gas pills because I am still having pain when I get bloated. If I can keep things moving it is better.

  • With my last doc they didn't care a thing about my sugar after. I had to be on a liquid diet that first 24 hrs due to the CS but after that it was whatever I wanted to eat (SO NICE!).

My current doc does want to check my sugar levels after I have the baby but i'm not sure if she wants it done in the hospital or when I come for my check up.

I don't remember if they even checked my blood sugar once after I had DS.  They checked his regularly for maybe the first 24 hours and it was fine.

BTW I had both my c/s babies in the early morning (between midnight and 2) and was able to eat solid foods starting with breakfast the next day, so 6-8 hours later.  This was at two different hospitals.  I was given soft food for my first meal after DS, but I don't think that had anything to do with GD.  So the liquid diet after a c/s thing certainly isn't standard everywhere.

  • I didn't hear another thing about it after the c/s.  My c/s with DS was at 11:30am and I was able to eat solids the next morning for breakfast, along with a big delicious glass of grape juice. My c/s with DD was at 7:30am and I had DH go get me a sub for dinner.

My OB did check my fasting blood sugar at my 3 week post-c/s check up and it was fine.

  • After the procedure, I had the shakes pretty bad (which is very normal due to the meds but mine went on longer than usual I guess).  After a while, my nurse realized that my blood sugar may have been too low and gave me cranberry juice which almost immediately stopped the shakes.  I don't remember exactly when she gave it to me, but I'd say maybe 2-3 hours after the procedure.  Other than that, GD and my blood sugar was never mentioned and they never tested me.
