1st Trimester

1st trimester weight gain

I am 7 weeks tomorrow. I went from Size 2 to 8 in that time frame. Arguably, size 6 fits but it's just a bit too tight for what I am used to. Most of the extra weight is in my butt.

Is it normal to gain a lot of weight in the first few weeks? I've always eaten when I am hungry even when I was a size 2. It's just that I am A LOT hungrier now! I eat ~6 small healthy meals per day. I haven't even had chocolate once!

I hope it slows down because I am going to hit 25-35lbs way sooner than 40 weeks. Tongue Tied

  • are you going by weight? or dress size.  You know there is a lot of bloat in the first trimester.  If you didn't know.. now you do :D.

How can you tell if it's bloat vs. weight gain? The pants are tight around my butt so I assumed it was fat, not bloat...

I've gained about 2 pounds, I'm assuming it's since I stopped WW and am no longer counting points. I've been eating pretty healthy but I've also snuck in a few bowls of ice cream too.

Well for me I havent gained any weight but my belly sticks out more and I cant suck it back in. I would guess I have bloat. If the number on the scale changes, I would call that weight gain. I could be wrong but thats what Im thinking.

I'm 11 weeks tomorrow, and I've gained about 1 lb.  I'm still in my size 8s, but I wore a belly band today for the first time.  My waist has disappeared!  Everything I read says you should gain up to 5 lbs during the first trimester.   If you're eating healthy, then maybe it's just bloat?  Maybe there's more than 1 in there?

  • at my 12 week appt. i had gained about 2.5 pounds. i was so excited because i thought i had gained much more. i would go back and forth with sizes because of bloat! it was horrible. I'm a tad overweight to begin with so, i have really been watching what i eat. my doctor doesn't want me to gain more than 20 pounds..so far so good! good luck!

  • I gained 4 lbs during my first tri...and also tracked inches.  Pounds can be very deceiving -- especially considering that you should be drinking more water, and water is 8 lbs a gallon.

I knew my pre pregnancy measurements of thighs, hips, waist around navel and at thinnest part, and arms.  Even though I have gained 25 lbs at this point, I have only gained 1/2 inch on my thighs and hips, and a BUNCH on my belly, but that is where it is supposed to be growing :)

If you are truly gaining very fast, make sure you get 1/2 hour of activity a day, and you may want to track your calories to make sure you are getting enough protein and calcium (eat at weight maintenance for the 1st tri and early 2nd tri.)  Also try to get in a lot of veggies.  Finally, beware of the weight spikes.  There are times when I (and others from what I heard, so it is normal) would put on 3 lbs in a week, but then nothing for 2-3 weeks.

    Good luck :)

I have lost weight, but none of my clothes fit. It could just be bloat.

  • I'm about 10 1/2 weeks & I have lost like 6 pounds since I found out I was pg. BUT I am also always nauseated, therefore not hungry & not eating nearly as much. I really hope my eating habits change some after my 1st tri, but it's not a bad thing that I have lost a few lbs either! :)
  • I lost five lbs in the first tri with DD.

  • I agree with pp that there's a lot of bloat involved.  Just because you feel most comfortable in a size 8 doesn't mean that you've gained enough pounds to move you up 6 sizes in 7 weeks.

My advice would be to weigh yourself and talk to your doctor about it.  Gaining too much weight while pregnant will make it that much harder to get it off after (trust me, I know!).  Staying active helps too!

I'm 8 weeks tomorrow, and have fluctuated 3 pounds. Last week I was down two, today I'm up one.

However my pants don't zip! I finally bought a belly band at Target this weekend, and it's amazing! The woman that invented that thing is a lifesaver.

I think you will (and have) receive a lot of different answer to this question. Some women gain, some lose, and some stay the same. What's important is that you're aware of your intake (calories), and that you're trying to get exercise.

Weight is only one way of looking at it. Your blood volume is supposed to increase 10% in the first trimester. That's WEIGHT, but not fat or "bad" pounds. So maybe just measure your legs, arms, belly, etc. and track those changes instead.

  • I am 7 weeks and I just bought some maternity pants!! I have twins but still... I ahve been walking around with my pants unbuttoned and hooked with a rubberband and half unzipped for 2 weeks now. I hear there is alot of bloat so I assume this is it.  This is my first pregnancy and I an pretty tiny. I figured I needed to be comfortable so stretchy waistbands here I come!

To those who are not gaining anything, I LOATHE YOU! J/K :)

I have no idea how much I have gained but as of last week I cannot fit into ANY pants.  Even my yoga pants are uncomfortable.  I have some bella bands but I am not thrilled with them...I am still super uncomfortable.

I have been drinking TONS of water, working out daily, and monitoring everything I am eating.  I guess we are the lucky ones...

I'm right there with ya! I'm only just 5 weeks, and none of my jeans fit, my khaki's (that were loose before) are tight. I bought a bband the other day, and it does help, but I'm still uncomfortable!

I have gained about 5 lbs, I know a lot of it is bloat. I seriously look way more preggo then I am! :P

  • No weight gain for me, either.  I've lost 3 pounds.  My OB Coordinator said you can expect to gain 3-5 pounds in the first trimester.  Your increased blood volume alone will add around 2-4, plus your boobs are starting to get bigger.  I highly doubt you've gained enough weight to move you up two sizes.  That would mean you've gained 10-15 pounds, I think, and that's just not possible unless you were eating entire pizzas every night.  It's bloat.  Bloat makes your tummy stick out but it can also cause water retention which will affect you all over.  Try to drink more fluids if you can.  That's helped me with bloat.

  • I'm 11 weeks and I've gained 6-7 lbs (depending on the day). When I was 6-7 weeks I was SUPER bloated, and felt like I had gained 10+ lbs. But now it seems to be leveling out a bit. I've been eating fairly healthy, but there are days I just cannot stomache veggies, but I love fruit and V8 juice has become my best friend. Mind you so has a popsicle almost every day... I was quiet nauseas so far and eating frequently helped me a lot. I've always drank tons of water so hopefully that has helped things as well.

One problem I did have was I was bloated because I wasn't going to the bathroom (#2) properly, I've had to eat prunes and get fiber cereal, and that's helped with the bloat a lot.

  • I was told by my dr that our goal would be to not gain anything because Im already overweight. So far I havent gained anything which I am extremely thankful for. I think different people's bodies react differently to the baby indside. I think if you watch what your eating, and do small exercises everyday, you and baby will be healthy :) I am however EXTREMELY bloated!! No fixes for that yet unfortunately... Good luck!!

  • Oy vey, ideally speaking, you're not supposed to gain any real weight in the first trimester other than bloat.  Don't start adding extra calories to your diet until the second trimester.  You're feeding a pea at this point.  Not an infant.
  • I wouldn't let the pants size fool you.  I have lost 4 pounds in the first trimester, but my normal pants were too tight so I ended up buying maternity and they are just better, because for me it's all right in front already so the pants hurt.  You get so bloated.  I thought I was gaining till I went to the doctor and found out I actually lost.  Can't tell, looks like I have a little extra on the belly.
  • I am 7 weeks and I only fit my pants that were big on me before. I have not gained any weight, it is all bloat for me. I am also having trouble going number 2, so I think that is contributing to my bigger than normal belly.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I've already gained about 3-5 pounds but I also know I am retaining water---my fingers, eyelids, face are all swollen! So I'm attributing it to water weight at this point and I am having trouble drinking enough water because of the nausea but I'm trying.  So hopefully that will get easier and I can move things along.  I've pretty much been wearing dresses/skirts everyday because pants are not comfortable :(
