2nd Trimester

oh for frig sakes

I thought it was a girl, I really did. My hospital isn't legally allowed to tell you what the gender of the baby is. It's really stupid, but they let me look at the area where the genitals would be and guess, and before we went I looked at a bunch of different pictures of girls and boys ultrasounds at 19 weeks. I pretty much knew 3 lines for a girl, and a turtle for a boy. We saw the bright white 3 lines, they were very obvious and I didn't see any circles or anything hanging so I was so sure it was a girl!! But someone told me that sometimes on boy ultrasounds there are just the 3 lines but the middle one is longer. I'm pretty upset, I don't know why she couldn't just tell me. I'm far enough along to pretty much know.. Just in case I made an appointment at another place where they WILL tell me the gender, and I go in a week. Also, all my ultrasounds are supposed to be free but if I schedule my own it's like 125 bucks.. but I'd rather pay the money and know for sure! Does it sound like a girl to you? or do you think there's a chance it's a boy. I just thought the testicles and penis would be visible by now..

Pay for an elective u/s and then you'll know.

And there is no way to tell you what you are having based on a verbal description. I am not being snarky, it's just the truth.

No, I know haha I wish I had a picture to show you.. definitely getting the elective one.

If you aren't trained to read an u/s picture it would be anyones guess letting you look at the picture. It also depends on when everything is visable, usually you would be able to tell by now but depending on your size, the babys position, ect you just never know.

If you are having an elective u/s to find out the sex, you should 100% have to pay out of pocket, there is no reason for insurance to cover that.

Good luck! I hope you get a better answer at your next one!

I know, that's what I said. I asked her if she could at least give me a hint or something, but they're not allowed to say.. just their policy I guess. If I had have known sooner I would have scheduled the elective one way earlier!

    I wouldn't pay.

I wouldn't if it wasn't for the fact that my next ultrasound is when I'm 30 weeks haha. Just would really like to know. My doctor even told me they would tell me. But because it was on the X-ray floor and not maternity they wouldn't tell me...

  • That is the dumbest thing i have ever heard! They won't tell you the sex?! Why not? If you really want to know, then I guess you should go for the elective. Or you can be team green!

I don't know why they won't tell you, but good luck at the elective scan!  Those are more fun anyway.  Usually they give you longer video, more pics, etc.  Both of mine were AWESOME.  I got a package deal so I got the sex determination one practically free (I think the package was maybe $5 more than the basic 32w 3D u/s.)  And they are really nice to you, spend a lot of time trying to get you good shots, etc.

Our last u/s was Thurs last week (exactly 22 weeks) and the tech wasn't supposed to say anything.  She technically didn't either.  After she did her thing and looked at the baby and took 96 pictures! no joke!  She did the little "tour" and got to his bum and said this is the bum, the two legs and there in between you can decide for yourselves what it is.  I knew right away (heck at 9 weeks I knew it was a boy) but I said, Its a boy!  and she shook her head yes while saying I can't say.  She also did the awesome thing and had the radiologist look over it for us ASAP and send it to my dr's office ASAP as well.  By the time I got back to work and called my dr's office to have them tell me on the phone it was there and the receptionist had the note in my file from my dr saying that they were able to tell me.

  • You should go to an elective ultrasound place (not at a hospital) and it will likely be a lot less than 125 and they will tell you the gender there. I had mine done at 15 weeks at an elective place and it was about 60 dollars.

  • I'm sorry but I've never heard of a hospital not being able to tell you the gender. Even when I worked in OBGYN we were able to tell the couple if they wished to know. When the hell did this start? Or am I totally misunderstanding what we're talking about? Which is entirely possible...I've been doing that a lot these days. Oops!

  • I got an elective oneat 16 weeks and it was only $100 b/c I chose the 3D but the 2D one for gender determination was much cheaper.  I would def check to see if you can just do the 2D one.

  • our hospital's policy is also not to tell.

my a/s was at 19 1/2 weeks and the tech said she was pretty sure it was a girl but she couldn't 100% say becase they're not really supposed to say one way or the other (funny since the NT lady said she was 95% sure at 13 weeks)

My MW didnt' say anything the next week at my regular apt either untill we said something first and then confirmed what our n/t scan lady said at 13 weeks.

i'm guessing some places have a policy against saying anything due to people who just flat out don't want to know untill birth and have complained in the mean time if they were told.  just a guess though.

Here in Canada, there are a bunch of hospitals where the tech is not allowed to tell gender, but the doc will at your next appointment. This is unfortunately because of cultural gender selection when some want to abort female fetuses.

  • If its bothering you, then an elective u/s is money well spent.  I would do one if the hospital wouldn't tell me.

Really? Sex isn't usually determined until 17w or later. So two questions...

    1. Abortion that late is legal in Canada?

    2. Abortion for sex selection when the fetus is a female is really common enough in Canada? I would think this was more common in areas where reproduction numbers were strictly enforced for population control.

ETA: I don't doubt that in Canada they might not tell you the sex of the fetus. I'm just not sure I believe this reasoning.

I just thought they won't tell you because they don't want to be held responsible if they were wrong.

Where I had my elective, it was $50 for "gender determination" (I know they are really determining the sex, this is just what they called it.)  I paid about $125 for "gender determination", three printed out thermal pictures, a CD with 10-15 (Actually she gave us closer to 20) pictures, a DVD of the ultrasound (supposed to be 5 minutes... more like 8 or 9) and a stuffed animal for DD that played a recording of the baby's heart when she presses the belly.  Totally totally totally worth it!

That's what I'm getting too :) I'm excited to get the pictures with everything. It's $99 for JUST the gender and $125 for the pictures and everything.. figured it would be worth it just to get it all, but I was surprised at how expensive it was. It's the only place in New Brunswick I could find, it's also 3 hours away from where I live :. Really don't want to wait until I'm 30 weeks to find out for sure though so I'm just going to go for it.

My tech couldn't tell me either. Said my dr had to decide to tell me or not. However, baby didn't cooperate which she told us. You may have never heard the rule since some cultures may be offended, and we try to be as nice and multicultural as possible. I didn't learn this until after my a/s.

I'm not questioning whether the tech could tell. I'm sure there are probably rules against that. I do question that reasoning though.
