Dolls for Boys

No, not action figures. Like, straight up dolls.

When I was about Charlie's age, my favorite thing was my Cabbage Patch Doll. Is it weird that I want to get one for C? His new favorite word is "baby" (I think he picked it up at daycare) and I think it would be good to teach him gentle touch (he torments the cat and is starting to hit people).

What do you think about dolls for boys?

I don't see it as any different than me buying "boy" toys for B. She loves trucks and blocks and balls. I bought her a CPK baby and she's never given it a second glance, lol. And she looks at the babies at daycare with such disdain in her face, I fear what would happen if we ever brought home a baby sibling for her!

I see no problem with it whatsoever. A doll is part of imaginary play just like a play kitchen or dump truck. My MIL recently gave us DH's cabbage patch doll from childhood and my DH is about as "manly man conservative" as it gets so I don't think he could deny there's nothing wrong with a boy having a doll!

    C has Haba Graham.  https://www.amazon.com/Haba-12-Soft-Doll-Graham/dp/B004TWNQEC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337102428&sr=8-1

image I bought it for him (not from Amazon though, I had a gift certificate for somewhere else).  He's impressed with his shoes but that's about it.  I'm hoping he becomes more interested later because Max (we gave him his German name, LOL) is a really cool kid!  C does play some too with the babies at DC.  Clearly I have no issue with it since I bought him his own!  Smile

  • We have lots of dolls in our house.  So both of my boys have been around them (and a million other girl toys).  Isaac loves my daughter's baby doll.  He will hold it and hug it when she actually lets him touch it.  It's too cute.  So I think it's perfectly fine for a boy to have a doll.

  • I don't see anything wrong with it.

DS doesn't have one yet, but he has several stuffed animals that he's fond of. He practices giving them hugs and carrying them around, and he picks a different one every night to sleep with.

We'll probably get him a baby doll when I get PG with #2. It might be nice for him to practice taking care of the doll, so he can "help" when the baby gets here.

  • DS has a baby boy doll (one of the soft ones made for babies). I plan on getting him a CPK baby doll but will probably wait until we are pregnant with #2. If he's older by that point I'd probably get him a regular CPK boy doll.

Isn't he!?  I secretly think C doesn't really like him that much b/c Max has way more hair that C does.  Wink

  • I dont think it is a big deal! I think it is part of their imaginary play and natural for a boy to want to have a baby doll. Plus if you ever ttc conceive in the future it might help prepare him for a baby sister or brother :)

  • I don't think it's weird at all.  The boys in G's class at care play with the babydolls, though the girls are way more into the dolls than the boys are.  I think dolls are an outlet and a way to experiment.  G tries to feed hers, wipe its nose, put my shoes on the doll, make it kiss the cat, etc.  Those aren't just "girlie" things. I also started taking a doll with us to the doctor's office when G had a string of ear infections.  I asked the doc to look in the doll's ears first, to show G that it's not scary.  I guess my point is that a stuffed animal or doll or whatever can be a good learning tool for our kiddos (which is also what you suggested), so why not get one for C?  If he's not into it, he's not into it, and oh well, right?

  • J has a baby doll.  My mom got it for him (she asked first, I said of course it was fine).  It's over at her house.  He calls it baby and pulls it in his wagon, and it sleeps in a linen drawer on a bed of tea towels.  Sometimes he hugs it, sometimes he throws it down the stairs...

  • J has one that we use for diaper changes. The doll stays on the changing table and when I put him up there to change him, he says "baby!" and hugs his baby until we are done. Then he puts the doll down and gets down to play. Another little boy gave it to him when my BFF was babysitting for us. He wouldn't put it down for a long time lol

We don't have a doll for B yet, but I'd like to get him one.  He's recently started some imaginary play (he drags a blanket around to different spots in the house and pretends to take a nap.  with his eyes open.) so I'd like for him to have a doll so he can do more imaginary play if he wants to.

  • Cool! I'm not for sticking to traditional gender roles, so I'm okay with dolls. I guess I was more so looking for what your experience was with dolls, which from the sounds of it is very positive! I think C would like one - now to just pick one! :)

  • My brother had two dolls- a Cracker Jack doll and a Cabbage Patch.

I gave my boys a doll that I found when we moved- I must have bought it for either my neice or my friend's little girl and never gave it to them.  They love her- John will hug her and give her kisses- Nicholas will carry her around.  And yes they fight over her.

  • I think it is great to get dolls for boys. Do not hesitate.
