front facing carrier recs

Hi, all.  I'm looking for a front facing carrier.  The two at the top of the list are the BabyBjorn Comfort Carrier or the Beco Gemini.

I'm leaning towards the Beco Gemini just because it seems that I've heard more complaints about BabyBjorns in general, though maybe not this model.

Looking for feedback from those who've used either.  Or if there's another front facing carrier you'd recommend, I'd love to hear it, too!  Thanks!

Re: front facing carrier recs

  • Front facing carriers are not recommended in general because the awkward position can be bad for babies back. Also BabyBjorn is a "crotch dangler" in which baby is supported at the crotch (instead of around the butt and thighs) which also puts a lot of pressure on their back. Not sure if there are any "safe" front facing carrier on the market, a lot of companies refuse to make them, but I've heard much better reviews for Beco in general. If LO is the type that likes to see everything, maybe you could find a carrier that could hip carry (I think Ergo does, Not sure if Beco does) allowing LO to be facing inward but have the option to kind of face outward as well?

  • Adanessa is correct that front facing carriers are generally not recommended.  As far as I know there isn't a such thing as a front facing carrier that isn't a "crotch dangler".  That said, I have one, I use one, and LO loves it.  We use a Belle Baby Carrier and I'll post a couple pics later.  I also have an Ergo and kind of hate it.

  • What about a carrier that can do a back carry?  So that they are facing forward, but from behind you.  I have a Beco butterfly and I love it.  I just figured out the back carry recently and DS loves it!  And it is so easy!  I had a Bjorn and never really cared for it.

Or you can go the sling route to face outward.  Balboa baby or Hotslings both allow that position.

  • Ooops.  I was aware that *some* front facing carriers were bad....i didn't know that all front facing weren't recommended.  Hmmmmmm...

Yeah, I just know if we do chest to chest, DD is always twisting her neck/body to look out.  I figured a front facing would be more comfortable for her.  But front facing seems more awkward from the wearers perspective.  (Or maybe that's a question - is front facing awkward?  It seems like it might be.)

I've thought about a back carrier so she could look forward but worry it would be awkward to get DD in/out.  Is it a two-person operation?

At least it seems like most of the front forward facing carriers also have other positions.  Are those carriers "safe" when the baby is in a non forward facing position or with that design are they bad all the time?

Getting DS into the Beco butterfly on my back is super easy.  I can get him out alone, but it is a bit more tricky.  I'm still learning, and I think it will get easier the more I do it.  The butterfly has fabric between you and baby which makes it easier to get into the back carry without feeling like you are going to drop baby.  The Ergo doesn't and from what I hear can be more awkward to do the back carry.

  • I would suggest a ringsling for a forward facing carry. Their legs go in front of them in a sort of lotus postition that is much better for their hips. It's still not ideal for their back, but better than most.

  • Beco is your best option for forward facing, but still not recommended.  Beco in other carries is good.  I also rec Scootababy for hip carries for babies that want to be able to see.

  • Thanks, y'all!  I ended up getting the Beco Butterfly and I, DH and DD all love it.  DD even feel asleep in it today while I was wearing her!  (And I was comfortable the whole time!)  Major win.  I think we're going to use it a lot.  :)
