Would you be able to keep this secret?

I have less than 6 weeks left until my due date and I have been dying to find out the baby's sex. I reluctantly agreed to be surprised again because it was really imporant to DH and I did like being surprised last time. However, I am getting more impatient by the day!

So I had my opportunity today because I am measuring 5 weeks ahead and the midwife sent me for a sonogram just to check on everything. Baby and fluid are measuring right on target, it may have been baby's position or the fact that it's my second pregnancy so close to the first that is making my belly huge. Anyway, DH agreed that he would leave the room and I would could find out and just not tell him.

The tech couldn't see the money shot exactly because the baby had its legs closed and its feet in front of its bits, but she's pretty sure it's a boy! I'm totally excited, but now DH can't stand not knowing so he keeps asking me and trying to get hints. I know that he will regret not being surprised so I have to keep it from him. Plus, just in case the tech was wrong I don't want to get him set on one sex over the other and then be disappointed at the birth. But he's really hounding me now and it's hard to keep it from him!

Would you be able to keep the secret for 6 weeks? Did any of you know the gender of your baby and keep it a secret?

  • I would like to think I could do it.  :)

You mentioned not wanting to get his hopes up in case the tech was wrong.  Just make sure you don't get YOUR heart set on it either for the same reason.

I'd also remind him he agreed to this arrangement, so it's not fair to keep bugging you about it.  Tell him you'd be more than happy to schedule an elective u/s so you can both know for sure if he really wants to know.

  • LOL hell no. Honestly I would be so excited for a boy I'd probably be screaming it in the halls when I left the exam room. Idk how you will keep your mouth closed lol.

Eta- I am so excited for you now!! I know there's a chance it could be wrong, but how awesome to have 1 of each and so close together. That's going to be so fun.

  • No way could I keep a secret like that for that long. However, I also don't know what the big deal is about waiting until the end, we found out the minute we could what our LO was at our 20 week u/s, and we will find out again ASAP next time too. I figure you get surprised either way, whether at 20 weeks or at 40 weeks!

All that being said, I know a woman who found out early and told no one because her DH wanted it to be a surprise just like your DH. That's a lot of effort for me, but more power to you if you can keep it that way!

  • I could do it if I wasn't tempted by constantly badgering lol. H has to quit bugging you! And I would work very hard to remind myself that the tech could be wrong since she never got a clear look.

I know someone whose husband knew and she didn't - he kept it a secret from the 20wk scan.

  • Oh my, please learn from me.  My tech thought DS was a girl, and I found out for sure at 36 wks that he was ALL boy.  Definitely stick with gender neutral everything lol.

We didn't find out with DS and won't with future kiddos either.  This is not to say it didn't kill me not to know.  It drove me bonkers!!

I would never be able to keep the secret from DH, I'm a horrible liar and my face gets red and I look away when I'm fibbing.  I think he'd know even if I didn't tell him.

    Good Luck!

  • I wouldn't be able to keep it a secret. I think it would be so easy to slip on name ideas or just when browsing at Target to be drawn to picking up a couple outfits that are not gender neutral.

  • I would not be able to keep the secret, but DH knows when I am trying to hide something and pries it out of me, so yeah, I'd have caved by now! But think of it this way: Since the tech wasn't really completely sure, it is still going to be a surprise!
  • I'm not sure I could go 6 weeks without slipping up somehow, particularly if DH was looking for hints.   We tried to keep the sex a secret from everyone except close friends, but I know I slipped up and said "he" a few times at work.

    2 years, 2 surgeries, 2 clomid fails, 2 IUIs, 1 loss, IVF #1 - 10/25/10 = BFP!, DS is now 3.5yrs!
    TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
    Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

No. I'd have to tell DH. But then again, I'd never go for me finding out and him being surprised - or vice versa. We're either both waiting or both finding out.

  • Yes. If it was important to him to be surprised, I could keep the secret.

We found out at 20 weeks, but we kept it a secret from everyone, even our parents. That being said, I know with my DH, he would keep pestering me forever to find out if I knew. Thats why we found out in the first place. I would have been find not knowing, but DH is crazy curious and if he found out, he can't keep a secret, so we both found out. So I totally get the part where ur DH is trying to get it out of you, because my DH is just like that. If he will be disappointed if you tell him, then just keep reminding him that he wanted to keep it a secret. If it seems he really changed his mind about keeping the secret, I say tell him and get him off your back :)

  • I would definitely try, if I knew that he didn't really want to know. If he was hounding me for hints, it would be hard.

Also, I think that I would accidentally let it slip. My dad didn't want to know the sex of our baby (he never wants to know, even though everyone announces and it's pretty impossible when everyone knows except one person) and I accidentally said "she" in reference to the baby. And my dad lives super far away and it's not like I talk to him every day, like I do my husband.

I do think though that it's probably better that she didn't get a clear look. That might make it easier, because even if you slip, you could be wrong.

And, congrats!! A boy would be exciting. My brother and I are 11 months apart (he's younger) and it was pretty fun :)

  • Yes, I could do it. I know someone who did it from 20 weeks on as well.
