Weight for a preemie?

My MIL called today to tell me that a family member had her baby today.  She told me that they thought that the baby was 10 weeks early (how do you not know how early the baby is, didn't she get an EDD very early on?).  But she also said that she weighes 5+ lbs.  That seemed like a big baby if she was 10 weeks early but I could be wrong.  MIL just suffered a stroke and there are things that lead me to think she is having some memory issues.  Just wondering if this is another I should add to my list or if I am just wrong about this.  If you had or know of a baby born at 30 weeks, what did baby weigh?

Re: Weight for a preemie?

  • Err, yeah... my girls were 5.5 lbs a piece at 37 weeks.  Granted, they are twins but I can't imagine a baby being that big at 30 weeks.  I would think a 30 weeker would be under 3 lbs??!

  • My nephew was born at 30 weeks and weighed 5+ lbs, so it can happen.

I was told Martin was trending large and then he was born at 34 weeks at 4lb 3oz. 5+ lbs seems large but I suppose it's not impossible.

  • Alexis was born at 37 weeks and she was 4lbs 6 oz. Most preemie babies that I know have been under 5lbs. But like everyone else has said, it may be possible.

  • At 32 weeks (my growth scan) S was estimated at 5 1/2 lbs, and when he was born at 35 weeks (late term preemie) he was 6 lbs 8 oz.  I didn't know when my last AF was so we took an educated guess.  If your periods are irreg. then I don't think it's that crazy.  A gf of mine was 5 months preggo before they found out she was expecting (she had "periods" throughout and lost weight through diet and exercise too).

  • My friend is pregnant with Twins and at the growth scan at 30wks yesterday, the each measured 3.7lbs. I would say 5lbs for a singleton would be possible, not common, but possible.

Lost Lilah (Audra's twin) at 26 weeks. Cause unknown. Forever in our hearts
  • Macy was pretty big for a ~35 week preemie - she was 6 lb 7 oz.  They kept telling me maybe my dates were off, and she was older than 35 weeks, but I charted and knew exactly when she was conceived.  Plus, my two ultrasounds were always right on.

  • Ev was 5 lb. 13 oz. at 36 weeks exactly. I'm sure it's possible to have a 5lb baby at 30 weeks, but Ev was definitely nowhere close to that.

  • Thanks ladies.  I just heard from baby's grandpa and she was in fact 5+ lbs. but she was born at 34 weeks, not 30.  So I still have to worry about memory issues with MIL. Sad  But baby is healthy so that is at least good news! Smile
