2nd Trimester

really guy at the gym?

Today was the first time I ventured into the gym I had gone to pre-pregnancy. I have complete placenta previa so I wanted to take it really easy (in addition to the fact that I haven't worked out in almost 6 months now). I was walking at a 5 incline and a 3.0 speed and one of the trainers comes up behind me and calls me weak and tells me I need to pump it up. I turned to him and said "sir, I am pregnant" and he replies with "I see pregnant women in here running all the time". I responded with "I have placenta issues, please leave me alone" (I was on the verge of punching him in the face). He then proceeded to ask me what show I was watching on my iphone and then ask me about my weight gain during pregnancy. I get he was trying to be a "trainer" but seriously? Has he never socialized with a pregnant woman before? You never ask about weight gain or compare her to other pregnant women. Some people are so ignorant.

  • This is why I switched to swimming and outdoor walks. Some people are just stupid.

  • Dumb. People are dumb. I really don't understand how people can keep saying weight gain comments/questions.

Sounds like similar reasons why I stopped.  I walk outside when it isn't too cruddy out.  But do my own excercises indoors.  I used to do Zumba 4 times a week at 2 hours per time.  The instructor once she figured out I was pregnant came up to me and said that pregnant women shouldn't be doing such hard work.  I had been doing it for 4 years by that point and she was a new instructor.  I complained and left.  I don't need that!

I go to Gold's Gym. I thought about complaining but I really didn't want to spend any more time dealing with the meat heads at the counter than I needed to.

  • What a ***. I would have told him to mind his own business. If you wanted his advice, you would have asked, right?

  • He's going to make people want to join another gym!  Pregnant or not, if someone is just getting back into a work out routine, they should have the freedom to start at their own pace.  If you didn't hire a trainer, you shouldn't be hassled by one!

Some people keep telling me I need to keep my feet up ... I've had other people tell me stories about women who ran marathons when pregnant.

Everyone has an opinion on what the right amount of exercise is - but you have to do what is right for you.

  • It's because stupid ignorant pricks like this and their f-ing input people think pregnant women are crazy. This is also why I work out at home and outside. Sorry this happened to you but I still would have thrown my water bottle at him.

My response would have been something along the lines of:

"Wow, I didn't realize that medical degrees were a pre-requisite for personal trainers these days!!"

    What a jerk.

    Sorry that happened to you.

WTF - what a jerk. I would call and complain. Unless I ask for your advice, keep it to yourself.

  • I go to a gym and lift weights a few times a week. I am just waiting for someone to come and give me advice as I can see in several peoples eyes that they would like to. I already have my line ready "Ok tell me everything you know about prenatal fitness and the effects of exercise on the placenta...ok.....GO!" can't wait to see the deer in the headlight look!
  • Wow. I don't like gyms that much to begin with (I feel awkward working out in front of people.. Embarrassed), but to have someone come up to me and call me "weak" or tell me that I need to "pump it up," pregnant or not pregnant, I would seriously flip sh!t. Who the hell is he to tell anyone that they're weak or need to work harder?  Tell ya what, buddy.. How about you step off and let me work out the way I want to, and if I ever feel that I need your opinion, I'll tell you. Mmkay??

    What a pr!ck.

  • What a jerk! No one should have to explain their workout intensity to a random person! I could understand if someone was lifting with improper form and about to injure themselves... But telling someone to up their pace?  I'm surprised he didn't try and sell you a traing session

  • Idiot! I had some old guy come up to me at the gym (after I got off the treadmill - 45 minutes at a 4.7 speed) and tell me that I'm 'young and I need to hop back on.' I told him at 7 months pregnant I was doing pretty well and he says 'well that isn't an excuse.'

Um. I KNOW THAT. Hence why I'm AT THE GYM.

    Grrrr.

  • Complain! Luckily, you knew what was safe for you and refused to be pressured. What about a woman who wasn't familiar with what would be safe and would be pressured into doing something unsafe?

I agree. All our trainers at the gym where I work have a minimum of bachelor's degrees in exercise science and are certified by ACSM (clinical) in addition to other certs. Most gyms just have personal trainers that have little to no training in exercise physiology or working with individuals with health issues. Apparently at your gym they also have little experience with manners.

  • WOW! Guys like him make trainers look bad! My fiancee used to be a trainer (that's actually how I met him!) and when I told him about this he was taken aback! He even said you should report this douche. He should have been encouraging and praising you for the fact that you are in the gym and staying fit while pregnant. Sorry you had to deal with that ***.

  • That is disgusting. Unless I am paying for a trainer or choosing to ask one a question, I do not want ANY advice. People can have many, many reasons for simply walking, even very slowly, on a treadmill. This is what I am about to start doing while DH does some more fast paced workouts; my only issues are GD, which is helped with exercise, and blood pressure that is at risk of increasing at some point. Even I wouldn't feel comfortable running.

Pregnant or not, trainers need to keep their heads out of people's butts. There's no way I'd let that go without complaining. What if he encourages you to run, you run, and something terrible happens? Not saying you'd be dumb enough to ignore what your doctor has said, but some people are. Then the gym would be on the hook for what the trainer suggested. I think the gym would want to know about this.
