Ktan vs Ergo

Hi All -

Looking for some advice for a baby carrier/sling. I need one that I can wear around the house and that DD can sleep in or spend extended lengths of time, something that will be cool for the summer. I have a Moby but that will be too warm. I have heard K'tan or Ergo are good choices, but please give your recommendation on one or the other?  TIA!

Re: Ktan vs Ergo

  • I have both and I really prefer the K'tan right now. I'm petite and the Ergo is bulky and hard for me to do chores in while I'm wearing him. He's too big for the infant insert (almost 17lbs), but doesn't like the sitting position yet. I'm sure the Ergo will be better for when he gets bigger.

  • I ADORE my ktan, especially for around the house because is is soft and unstructured. It is my carrier of choice. We have an Ergo as well. The Ergo is adjustable so me and DH can both wear, whereas the ktan is sized XS-XL so he can't wear my small.

  • I have a ktan as well and I just love it! I have the regular one and am thinking of getting the breeze one for the summer if I go outdoors and it is hot.  My LO also likes the Ktan and can easily fall asleep in there.  It is my new staple present for new moms.

  • I love my Ergo. I can wear her for hours at a time and my back doesn't hurt at all. I have serious back pain with pretty much every carrier (I think I own ) except my Ergo. I wore her at the zoo last week, I wear her on family walks, at the grocery store, at home, pretty much everywhere.

  • I don't know anything about ktan's, and haven't ever found Ergos comfortable (personally, soooo many people do love them).  I do wear my baby constantly though so I thought I'd suggest looking at woven wraps or mei tai style carriers.

Woven wraps have a bit of a learning curve, but you are already using a Moby so you should understand the concept enough to pick it up.  Youtube has great videos for learning different carries, you get a TON of variety from just one wrap.  I wear my newborn on my back for housework, trips to the store, even eating out at a restaurant.  I wear him on the front for going on walks or just general snuggles, and there are also hip carries that a lot of people love and are similar carries to what you get with a ring sling.  The wraps themselves some in all different fabrics (light and airy, to thick and cushy) and price points.

The other suggestion I have is a Mei Tai style carrier, it's a soft structured carrier that ties on similarly to a wrap, but has a pouch to hold the baby like an Ergo, it can also be used on your back and hip and has the added benefit of being quicker to put on than a woven wrap.  I've heard good things about the Baby Hawk brand though I haven't tried it myself.

I'd also suggest a way to try before you buy.  If you look up BabyWearers International, there are chapters that meet all over the country/world.  If you could find a meetup near where you live, you could try out several different style carriers.  They aren't intimidating, it's usually a group of moms at a public library with carriers strewn about to try on, you'll find women experienced in baby wearing to give tips in how to get the most comfortable fit.

that's all from me for now, sorry if this was more info than you were looking for :)

  • I have the Ktan Breeze and Ergo.  I haven't used my Ergo yet.  Lucas is only about 13lbs.  I do love my Ktan Breeze. It has breathable fabric you are looking for. I ordered it from BBB in black online.  The other choice was white. I can see white getting dirty very quickly.
  • I have an Ergo sport. I have no experience with the original Ergo, but I bought the sport specifically because it is supposed to be a lighter fabric/more comfortable in hot weather.

I can't rave enough about my Ergo. I used it with DD until she was 2 and nearly 30 pounds. The only reason I stopped wearing her was because it was getting uncomfortable (as I was pregnant).

  • Thank you all for your input! This was helpful!  I ended up getting the Ktan.  Unfortunately, there is no baby wearer group nearby.  If things don't work out with the ktan maybe I'll try something else, but fingers are crossed for this :-)
