Pumping from 1, getting nothing, Q

I EBF, but I'm trying to build a supply just for outings as needed. My LO eats from one side side usually. So around 9am I pump the rest off that side. However, I'm only getting 1/2 an ounce (use a manual pump). I don't think it's my pump, when I have a let down I get milk, but after 30 minutes I still only have 1/2 an ounce. I'm worried that if I pump the other side, I will some how end up engorged or mess things up.

Thoughts? Thanks!

  • It actually is your pump. What you're describing is pretty normal and is actually why women get soooo upset when something happens to their freezer stash. A freezer stash is EARNED in a way that few things in this life are!!!! Your baby gets more milk than that because she's far more efficient than the pump. As you keep pumping, it's possible that your body will respond better to the pump than it is now and you'll get a bit more than that. But the fact that you're not right now tells me that your body has regulated to the amount that your LO needs and you don't have an oversupply, and that's a good thing. Unless you're pumping for something very specific I would not pump the other side. Don't worry too much about having milk in the freezer. It'll happen. You don't want to create problems in the meantime.

  • I pumped the other side last time, and got 2 ounces; that's why I think it's not my pump. I can get milk from the boob that she hasn't eaten from; but 1/2 ounce from the side she did eat from. Is that normal? Am I supposed to go on just getting 1/2 an ounce at a time every day!?

It's normal. You shouldn't have enough milk to feed 2 babies. Breastfed babies take 2-5 oz per feeding, so if you were pumping an extra 4 oz every time, your body would think you had twins. Half an ounce is good after nursing.

But, it is also your pump. Just because you got a letdown doesn't mean that an electric pump (or a baby) couldn't get more. I'd invest in at least a single electric pump if you're really that interested in building a stash.
