Foods for early labor?

Anything I should make sure I have in the house for eating during early labor?  With DS, I had a PB&J on my way to the hospital (around 9 am) and nothing else until they brought breakfast around in the hospital at 8:30 the next morning.

I would maybe keep some granola bars on hand so you can get an energy boost from it and it'll keep you full a little longer.  I like the Kind healthy snack bars and the Odwalla bars.  I also drank juice to boost my blood sugar if needed, especially since i threw up everything I ate when entering transition.

  • I ate spring rolls, a pulled pork sandwich, and a Dairy Queen Blizzard.

I didn't throw up at any point in labour.

My plan for next time is similar - eat what I feel like at home, pack some snacks for the hospital. I didn't eat anything until after DS was born, but I was glad I packed snacks because the hospital food was not great and not as available as I wanted.

  • My MWs recommended stuff like bagels, soup, and fruit. We packed some granola bars & almonds as well. When I was in transition, my awesome nurse brought me some juice to keep me going, which seemed to help.

  • In early labor I had some yogurt, cheese and crackers. That is what sounded good at the time and was easy to get myself. My water broke 2 weeks earlly so dh was running around like crazy because of course he had not gotten anything ready. I had honey sticks right before DD was born to help with some energy.

  • My MWs said that it's really important (especially if your labor might go on for a while) to eat enough to have energy. They said that, if you can stomach them, complex carbs are good to have - even things like mac & cheese, pasta, and pizza. You really want your body to have something to work with. I'm going to try doing that if my body lets me... It would also be good to have some sort of electrolyte drink supply (especially if you end up throwing up at any point).

  • When I was in active labour (at home) with my son I had pizza for dinner - he was born several hours later.  I had also made fruit muffins, bought granola bars, crackers, energy drinks and similar snack items but never had a chance to eat any of it.  If I were you, I would have some snack items on hand that you enjoy and just eat whatever you want when the time comes.

  • Thanks, ladies!  We already have some things packed up to take with us to the hospital once I'm in active labor.  I have bags of nuts, dried fruit/nut mix, and 100 calorie cookie packs for DH.  I also have 2 32 oz bottles of gatorade (2 different flavors) for me and a bottle of powerade for DH.  As I read the responses to this to DH, he said, "We can get pizza delivered, BBQ is super close, spring rolls or any Chinese food for that matter, is close... we don't have a Dairy Queen very close, but we can get you frozen yogurt from Sweet Frog..."

  • Theoretically, you won't be at the center long enough to need any of that except maybe something to drink but they have juice available if you want it. Also, if you deliver too late for whatever meal they have bagged lunches (which are pretty decent) until you get the next available meal.
  • Oh, I forgot to say, if you are easily distracted, do NOT bring snacks with crinkly packages for DH! I was trying to get into my zone with the Rainbow Relaxation & DH was crinkling and crunching away on little rice cakes. It made it totally impossible for me to focus, lol.

  • my midwife recommended protein shakes, basically protein, juice, applesauce, things that are cool to eat perhaps watermelon cubes or sliced fruit would be good. I asked if things such as crackers would be good and she said I would probably throw it in her face if she tried to get me to eat it, lol. But we will see when I get to that point....my sister who is a doula recommended tons of water or electrolytes because it helps your body with the contractions and your able to push better well hydrated.
