Stroller Theft?

So we have decided on the Uppababy Vista stroller which I just love. I only have one concern with the price. If I'm going to spend almost $700 on a stroller, I am super paranoid about it getting stolen at places that I have to leave it like the zoo or disneyland.  Have you ever or have you ever heard of anyone using a bike lock on a stroller when you leave them? I'm assuming you could lock it in place the same as you could a bike.  Or do you know if they sell something like this specifically for strollers (although I'm not sure how different it would be). I know this sounds a little crazy but I don't want someone just walking away with our hard earned money. Thoughts?

  • I think that might be part of the reason why most people rent strollers at places where you have to leave them unattended?

  • We use a standard bike lock and run the cable through the wheels.  It's not perfect, nor is it attached to a pole or other stationary object.  I figure it's enough to deter the average person looking for a quick getaway.

So far, the bike lock has worked well for us and we already had one.  A coworker of DH got us a Buggy Guard, but we returned it in favor of other items.

  • Stroller theft, especially in NYC is very common. I don't really see much of a reason to leave one unattended though. At most places you keep it with you. The exception would be rides at Disneyland, but by then you'd also have a lightweight and should probably bring that with a Buggy Guard instead. The Vista is a good stroller, but you'll still need a lighter one eventually in my opinion.
  • I have a Vista and I lock it up with a cable bike lock. I feel like people in town give me the side eye but I don't care. It's expensive and if we lose it, we won't be able to afford another. It gives me peace of mind so I can relax where we are instead of looking for the stroller every two seconds to make sure it's still there! Most people in my town just leave theirs strollers out unlocked (Boston suburb).

  • I would be worried, especially with a $700 stroller.  Never hurts to lock it up.

I get nervous with my city mini double, so I barely leave it anywhere unattended.

  • I generally don't leave my stroller anywhere that isn't within clear sight. They do make locks especially for strollers, but they are mostly cutesy and not as protective as you'd want, so you're better off going with a good bike lock.

  • I have this lock:

But I've never had to use it.  I don't bring my OBV many places - we use it mainly for walks in the neighborhood.  I can imagine instances where I'll use it, they just haven't come up yet.

It's a little easier to use than a bike lock because the cable is narrow and you can snake it around all the parts of the stroller.

Also, I have heard that some places, like amusement parks, do not allow stroller locks and will cut them if you leave a locked stroller unattended.

  • We use a bike lock for our UBV. The only time I've ever needed to lock it up is theme parks and the zoo. All of the theme parks we've been to have had objects to lock the stroller to in "stroller parking" ... at the zoo if there isn't something nearby to lock it to we put it through the wheels and up the frame so it can't be pushed easily and then park it near the ride attendant.

  • We were given a Teutonia and I was worried about it at first when we would go to Disneyland and then I realized that I have never seen another Teutonia there so I doubt anyone would know that it was an expensive stroller. We have never locked it. I would definitely be more worried about a Vista though and would probably use a standard bike lock.

One thing that I have noticed about Disneyland that on busy days, the employees will move the strollers around to make more room. There have been a couple times after coming out of a ride like Pirates and the stroller wasn't anywhere near where I left it. Freaks me out everytime but I understand the need to keep the stroller area organized when it's super busy.

  • I have a Vista and have been to places like Sesame, the zoo, and the park and have left it unattended. I have just crossed my fingers and said a prayer. I think this time I will look into a bike lock. I'd be so upset to come back and my stroller be gone.

  • We have an Orbit and a Bugaboo. If we are going to the zoo or places where you park the stroller we use the City Mini bc here in NYC ppl steal Orbits and Bugaboos A LOT. They then sell them on CL.

We have taken my niece to Disney World many times and we took her bugaboo bee and have never had a problem with theft. We will be taking a UBV this September to use for my child. One thing I found useful is to take one of the wheels that pops on and off with you on to the ride or show. It deters people to take a stroller with 3 wheels.
