Am I that out of the baby food 'okay' list loop?

I know that since B is just starting to get over the gagging and into some finger food, I feel a little 'behind' on some things he's eating.  He's been doing great with veggie and fruit pickups by Gerber, Cheerios, puffs, crunchies...he is eating some of our dinner most of the time, and we feel like he's progressing pretty well.

Then I looked at the 9-12 month board at a post for what other 10 month olds are eating.  People are giving their 10 months old hot dogs and peanut butter.

I'm sort of in a stupor over it...really?  My pedi is so against peanut butter until at least after 1 year, because of peanut allergies.  And HOT DOGS?!  Really?  For a 10 month old?  I wouldn't even think of it...everything I have read/heard/seen indicates being at least 2 for hot dogs.

Am I really that far out of the 'what is ok' loop?

  • Peanut butter I can understand to some extent but the only issue with hot dogs (besides them not being the healthiest) is choking and if you cut them up, you don't really have to worry about that.  We have given N hot dogs before - I don't see it as that big a deal.

  • my pedi is pretty much ok with anything except raw honey. a lot of new research is showing that having it earlier is actually preventing allergies, not causing them. But pedis still seem pretty split on it.

I don't give hot dogs, too much salt/nitrates plus i think they're a choking hazard? But I do give my 10 month old peanut butter.

  • My LO hasn't had hot dogs, cause I also worry about choking on them, same goes with grapes and other things that seem to firm to mash in her mouth. She has had nuts though (like peanut butter and pine nuts), I felt ok to let her try them since we have no allergies in our family, and she did fine.

  • Our pedi is against peanut butter until after 1 year old as well, so DS hasn't tried that yet. He hasn't tried hot dogs yet either but I really don't have a problem with him trying them, we just don't eat them often so he hasn't had the opportunity.

  • certainly not hot dogs here. I gave the tiniest little bit of peanut butter the other day - no reaction so i think i might slowly introduce it now.

C has tried Lamb & Herb Sausages cut up small, Lamb cutlets cut up small and off the bone, all veggies pureed or roasted, home made chicken tenders - spag bol, fish fingers, basically C has eaten EVERYTHING we have eaten.

  • About the peanut butter and other allergens, our doc said that there are good research studies concluding both that foods introduced early with cause allergies AND foods introduced before a year will not cause allergies.  He told us to choose and then shrugged.

Except for dairy... he said no dairy. I give my ds yogurt.  I figure I'm prepping his gut for the dairy when he turns a year.

I have Caroline try anything we eat unless it's overly spicy and of course, no raw honey.  She's had some of my PB&J and pieces of a granola bar.  She hasn't had hot dogs yet but only because we haven't started grilling yet this season.  She's even had shellfish (crab, not shrimp).

Then again, she barely eats anything at all.  We generally just try throwing everything at her to see if it sticks.  I might be more careful if I knew she'd eat a bunch of it.

  • We pretty much give A everything at this point within reason. If I felt hot dogs were healthier, I would cut them up small and give them to her. But they are gross and filled with nitrates, salt and junk. Theres no point in her having a hot dog. We slowly introduced nuts and she's been ok. She had a PBJ a few days ago and did well. I don't buy into the early allergy thing. Then again, we didn't start with nuts that early - her birthday is only a few weeks away and our Pedi said to wait until a year. I think there are just different philosophies on feeding. I have friends whose 10-11 month old babies are still just doing purees and they are happy with that right now.

  • Vi eats everything we eat.  She has had burritos, fish, steak, everything.  We don't eat hot dogs but a few times a year at picnics.  I won't offer her hot dogs unless it is the only option at an event, they are full of nitrates and junk that isn't remotely healthy.  I haven't given her peanut butter or milk yet, per pedi, but everything else is far game and she loves it all!

This... i actually never even thought about giving Em hot dogs.  Seems wrong to me for some reason, even though I love them.

  • The only thing off limits via our pedi is honey.  He said all else is fair game.

C has peanut butter quite often.  It's a staple in my home :).  On hot dogs, other than the fact that they're unhealthy, I don't see the uproar.  We were at a bonfire this weekend and the only foods available were hot dogs and potato chips.   C ate some hot dog, and we had applesauce in his bag.

I Let Sophie try everything, except for dairy (soon!) and honey.

I have not given her peanut butter simply because I never eat it, not the biggest fan and have just never thought of it.

I have given Sophie a few pieces of cut up hotdog the other day, as long as you cut them lengthwise first then across, its ok. Same as a grape really.

  • Peanut butter makes me nervous and I'm not sure when I'll do it.  Hot dogs, while I'm fine with, I think are pretty unhealthy.  Once DD gets a taste of something she likes she wants it, so I'm afraid if I give her a taste she'll eat an entire hot dog.
  • Ev has had pretty much everything except honey. We grilled for his birthday party and he had a hot dog (cut up). It's not my favorite thing to give him since I know they aren't really healthy, but I see nothing wrong with them otherwise. He's also had peanut butter. Our pedi never told us either way whether to give it or not, and we have no history of peanut allergies, so we slowly introduced it. Actually, Ev kind of forced our hand - we went to Texas Roadhouse one night and he grabbed a full peanut out of one of the buckets and shoved it in his mouth before we could stop him! Figured if sucking on a peanut didn't cause problems it was probably ok to start peanut butter. :)

We gave V a little bit of PB and then our pedi told us not to because he is of the theory that the allergy will develop with exposure.  This got to DH so he said he didn't want to give any more PB.

We haven't had hot dogs since V started eating. I would give him one at a cookout or party. If there were other choices I would probably go with something else.  I think hot dogs are deliciously gross. Stick out tongue

This for us too.  We give her pretty much whatever we want within reason.  I try to stay away from the fried, salty, and processed.  She gets tid-bits here and there, but for the most part she gets the healthy stuff.

ETA: She had peanut butter for the first time a couple of weeks ago.  We made sure it wasn't spread to thick.  She did great with it!  And now, I keep uncrustables in the freezer for when we go out and I want to be able to grab something quick and easy.
