Help! I'm freaking out!!!

So, today I went to a traditional yoga class.  I have been doing yoga for about 6 months.  In the class I did a back bend and a shoulder stand and felt perfectly fine.  I am 14 weeks pregnant and started researching exercise in the second trimester when I got home.  I found a bunch of articles that said I should not be doing back bends and shoulder stands in the second trimester.

Could I have hurt my baby???!!!!!  I still feel fine except I think I'm getting majorly paranoid that I'm going to miscarry or something any minute....

 Help!!!

  • You're fine.  I've read those boards too.  And yes it is recommended that you avoid those position, though from my understanding this is more for YOUR health than your baby's.  If you aren't experiencing any pain or bleeding, then you are all good.  I'd take it easy from now on when it comes to those stick to positions that don't require you to stretch your tummy waaayyyy out, and don't do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, achy, or pain of any sort.  And if you are super super worried talk to you doctor.

  • You are fine- but in the future you should avoid any poses in which you are inverted or in which the energy flows downward or out of your body.  I would recommend that you take a prenatal yoga class or read up on poses to avoid during pregnancy.  At the very least let your instructor know and she can advise you on modifications.   Also make sure that you are not stretching too far, your ligaments are much looser right now and you are likely to tear if you aren't careful.

  • I've been practicing vinyasa/hot yoga for 10 years.  With exception to the spine strengthening series (cobra, locust, full locust, floor bow), I have not restrained from doing any poses or inversions.  The only reason I stopped doing the spine strengthening series is because my boobs are so sore, the poses aren't worth the pain!

My midwife has been practicing bikram yoga for nearly 20 years, and continued throughout both of her pregnancies.  Her advice to me was to listen to your body.  If something doesn't feel right, stop.  And don't do any hand stands of any kind because they will make you dizzy.  My midwife also said that it is physiologically impossible to miscarry because of yoga.

You are fine and so is your baby.

This.  And a PP mentioned that it's more for your health than baby's, which I agree.  I had to switch to prenatal just for me, because bending my back at this stage sends me into excruciating pain.  I've never had any worry for little one.  Plus if prenatal isn't your thing, most studios also offer a gentle class.  I found that really helps when the back pain makes things difficult.

My yoga instructor has me take it easy on deep twists, I go the opposite way and do more of an 'open' twist.  I also don't do any inversions and instead put my legs up the wall.  Like everyone said, it's very important to listen to your body and just take it easy.

With my first pregnancy, I had to stop yoga for 10 weeks due to placenta previa.  When I was able to go back (in my third tri) it was crazy how little I could do at that point!  Yoga is really great and I'm going to keep going as long as I'm able.
