Pampers Swim Diapers - FYI

We took DD to the beach yesterday. It's about a 10-15 minute drive from our house. I put her in a Pampers brand swim diaper for the ride over just b/c I thought it would be easier to do at home than once we got there. I just wanted to give a heads up to let anyone know who doesn't already that those diapers do NOT absorb pee. There was so much pee in her carseat!!! The diaper didn't absorb anything and her Britax carseat is only hand washable according to the manual.

I'm not sure if maybe swim diapers are just there in case LO poops, but it totally is useless for pee. I guess I should have known since ether are so much more thin than regular diapers, but I didn't think about it.

  • Yep, swim diapers are not designed to absorb, otherwise they would get huge in the pool!  That is why a cloth swim diaper is awesome, even if you don't CD.  It does the same thing, just acts as a barrier.

  • Ok, so this is probably a really dumb slash obvious question... but if swim diapers don't absorb pee, and the LO pees while in the pool, the pee just goes right into the pool??  What's the point of even having it?  Just to catch poop?  Lol, obviously I am not a swimmer or ever taken DD swimming.

My question exactly!  I took DD and her cousin (2yo) to a splash fountain.  Her cousin peed in her swim diaper before we got there.  It got all over her swim suit.  I didn't understand the point of it.

I am SO glad you asked this b/c I was just about to type the samething.  Answers anyone?

  • I'm pretty sure they're just there to make sure you don't get any floaters in the pool ;)

ETA: and FWIW, I know you all aren't under the mistaken impression that every 6 year old gets out to pee every time they have to go, lol :)

If a swim diaper absorbed pee, then it would also absorb the water they were swimming in and be full in a matter of minutes. Urine is actually very sterile and chlorine is enough to sanitize any issues. Urinary incontinence is not even a red flag for pool therapy. Feces on the other hand is hazardous and the chemicals needed to treat the water exposed to it are too harsh to swim in safely.

Woo hoo!  That means everyone can pee in the pool without worry! Stick out tongue

  • Yup. When we go to swim lessons, DD wears a regular diaper in the car. When we get to the pool, I change her into a swim diaper. The pee leaks right through. The diaper is just to hold in the poop

This exactly. But I honestly would have never done it if I didn't read review of swim diapers on amazon. And it's all swim diapers, not just Pampers.

  • Thanks for the info on swim diapers. On a different note, you can wash the carseat cover. I know it says to hand wash but it holds up just fine. :)

I definitely felt like a moron for posting this, but I just wanted to save someone else from having a car seat full of pee if they weren't really thinking about the concept of the swim diaper, lol! :)
