DS is 6 and a half months old now and I really want to stop using the paci. DH has it in his mouth all the time, including naps. I am home with DS most of the time and I on the other hand really try NOT to give it to him. I tell DH OVER and OVER that he is messing up the sleep training we-oh, wait, I did, by giving him that danged thing all the time. He was STTN from 8 to 6 am, and the last 4 nights he has been up 3 or 4 times a night crying for paci. I let him cry (I go check on him every 5-10 min), and DH can't handle the crying, so he goes and gives him the paci!!!!!!!!!!!!!

! Has anyone weaned from the paci yet?

Re: Getting rid of paci?
I can't help since DD just gave up the paci on her own when she found her fingers at like 3 months. She now just chews on it a bit and spits it out.
I think the only solution I could offer is to throw them all out....then NO ONE can give him a paci as there wouldn't be any in the house to give him!
I'm a fan of taking stuff away cold turkey and dealing with a few days of fussing.
DD2 never took a paci and I took DD1's away at 15 months cold turkey.
my read shelf:
Nope. Our pedi recommends that we get rid of it by two, so we have until the end of Sept-- as of now, we are trying to only use it at night & during naps. (And when I say we, I mean ME. DH gives it to him all of the time & I take it away all of the time.) Luckily, DS2 doesn't care anything about his paci!
Is there a reason you want to take it away so early? If your using orthodontic ones, LOs teeth shouldn't be effected. Is it just a personal preference? (I understand-- I introduced the sippy cup pretty early and the day DS1 figured out how to use it, I got rid of all of his bottles. He was 8 months old. I was determined the bottle would be gone no later than a year.)
I think for us, it's not affecting LO during the night sleep (he won't wake up if he doesn't have it) so we won't be taking it away just yet. I think we will stop at the year mark, especially since he likes the non-orthodontic ones.
Have you thought about letting LO decide to get rid of it. I think instead of just taking it away, we might make the process a little easier on LO (and us) by poking little holes on the paci so it becomes ineffective. Then LO won't want it anymore. Just a thought. Good luck!
