TTC after 35

HSG today, not the news I was expecting :(

Well had my HSG finally, appt time was at 1pm, my Dr didn't arrive until 3:45, I was ready to walk out. Excuse my language, but that mother f'er was PAINFUL! Sure the pain was only really bad for about a minute or 2 but it definately sucked.  I'm back at work now and totally fine, though I do expect I'll be spotting a bit for the next day or so.

Good news is right side is totally clear, bad news is he thinks my left side is blocked. He tried to flush extra dye in and still didn't see it come out. He did say that he needs to look at the xray tape on a different monitor because the contrast was bad on the one he was using. Is it possible something was blocking his view? But now I'm obviously freaking out.. last month all my follicles were on the left except for one, and this month my one mature follie is on the left.I'm holding onto the fact that I have been able to get KU, but clearly if I want to get this done quickly I will most likely need to continue w/ fertility treatments and move on to IVF sooner rather than later.

I was relieved that my uterus is not in fact heart shaped which I've been told by 2 different ultrasound techs. It's not even close to being heart shaped! So now of course I'll be googling blocked tube and bfp for the rest of the week..

Re: HSG today, not the news I was expecting :(

  • The fact you had to wait 2 hours and 45 minutes for your appointment is unacceptable--that sucks! I'm sorry it wasn't quite the news you wanted to hear, but at least it might give you a better, more successful plan for moving forward.

  • So sorry! Waiting for something like that is horrible! I hope they can make a clear determination on whether it is blocked or not. Yay for a classically shaped uterus!

  • Ugh.  I'm sorry you had to wait.  I don't like scaring anyone, but yea, my HSGs hurt like nobody's business!  Glad you are feeling better.  Hope they get back to you soon on what comes next.

  • I'm sorry it hurt, it sounds painful from what everyone has been describing.  I hope they can make an accurate diagnosis about your left tube.  Try and rest up!

  • oops!! I don't want to scare anyone about the pain part if you haven't had this test done yet. Yes is hurt, but I lived, I'm in no pain now at all and it really was very quick. In the end it was worth having it done and getting it over with. I have a monitoring appt at 715am tmrw w/ RE so i'll hopefully have more info then.

  • That's an unpleasant surprise. Would it be easily fixable? I have no idea. A fixable fertility issue would be good news.

I hope you get some answers at the next monitoring appt.

I hope you don't mind my responding to your posting. I am a graduate if this board and so I lurk over here all the time and cheer you on, mostly to myself :)

My hsg was also really painful though temporarily so because I too had a blocked left tube. It turned out I had lots of endometriosis gumming up the works. I had a lap and when the dr pushed more dye thru the tube while I was under (they can use morr force when you are under anesthesia) it came clear. Tube opening procedures may also be done with a cannula with a hysteroscopy.

Though I got my endo cleaned out and my tube open, I still did not get pregnant without assistance, though I never got pregnant ever on my own, so it is quite possible in my case that my endo is sperm or embryo lethal.

Since you have gotten pregnant before it seems worth a try to get your tube open so you have more opportunity to conceive. That would be my advice or what I would want to do if I were in your shoes.

Oh, and as far as I can tell, if no dye spills from your tube during the hsg, then they conclude usually that it is blocked. My tube would not even fill during my hsg, so it was pretty clear.

Good luck and I hope your right side is all you need this cycle :)

  • Ugh!!!  I hate it when you have to wait a long time just for them to hurt you!!!!  I'm glad that you at least know something though.  Hopefully the doctor will see something more from the tape.

Sorry it was painful, but at least they found the issue and can fix it.  It really sucks that you had to wait so long for the doctor.
