June 2011 Moms

what sunscreen?

Now that the warm weather is here, it's time to start thinking about sunscreen again.  My older guy practially lives outside and I suspect this little one is going to be the same.   We were out in the sun all afternoon today and I kept thinking about sunscreen.

We used Blue Lizard today.    I need to get more sunscreen soon since we don't have a ton of it left and haven't decided if we want to switch to another brand.

Re: what sunscreen?

  • There are only 3 sunscreens on the market I believe that are said to actually be good for babies (most stuff for sale has been shown to not provide adequate protection)- Blue Lizard is on the list as one of the best. The others were California Baby and Neutrogena Baby.

We use California Baby and have been very very happy. DD has very pale skin and wore it to the beach in Hawaii at 3 months old and no burns. I have heard very good things about the one you currently use too but haven't used it to know how it compares.

LOVE this stuff. It doesn't stink. It is supposed to be scent free but does have a bit of smell, but not stinky.

It has a 0 safety rating on EWG.

    ...and no burns here.

Where did you read that? We use Badger Baby, which has excellent protection ratings and very low toxicity levels (rated a 1). Neutrogena Baby cream is rated a 7, and has lower UVA protection ratings (and the same UVB ratings).

We use Aveeno Baby, which I bought because I thought that I had read it was a good choice.  Now I don't remember where I read that, so maybe I'm wrong?  He's been using it for weeks and there have been no burns yet.

The face stick has great low toxicity ratings (1) and good protection coverage. The creams have ok sun coverage but fairly high toxicity ratings.

You can look everything up on ewg.org/skindeep. The sunblocks all list ratings for UVA and UVB protection, sunscreen stability, and health concern.

We use the Aveeno stick which is rated a 1.  I use it all over, not just on her face. It goes on easily and I like that I can just grab it at Target instead of ordering it online.

I may try that one MommaA posted too, though.  I love our Loving Naturals lotion!

  • We use Nutragena Pure and something.  The only reason I bought that one was because I could actually get it at the grocery store instead of having to order it online.

  • Right now we have the Aveeno Baby because it was that or water babies at Target.  He has Neutrogena Free and Pure, or whatever it's called, at Day-Care.  I've only used the Aveeno once so I can't tell you how I really feel about it yet, but it did go on easily!

I ordered TruKid Sunny Days sunscreen.  It has an EWG rating of 1.  It just started getting warm here this past weekend so I haven't tried it yet so I can't speak to how well it rubs in.

I was very happy with Blue Lizard when I used it on our vacation. I will continue to use that.

  • We use Adorable Baby and Badger Balm.  They are the ones I've found with the best ratings for safety

We used Neutragena until I found out it gets a 7 on the scale (scale is 1-10 with the higher numbers being worse, not better) which puts it in the red zone for safety.

I purchased BabyGanics.  It gets a 2 on the scale (in the green zone for safety) and is only $8 for 6 ounces.  I found it at Target in the baby section (not the sunscreen section).  Tried it out last week and Audrey did fine with it.  It's nice and thick too.  So a little goes a long way.

It was between that and California Baby.  Although, CB gets a 1 on the scale, it was $19 for 3 ounces.  And it only had "good" uva/uvb protection.  Protecting from the harmful rays is number 1 on importance for me.

  • We use Aveeno Baby and really like it. We take DS swimming at least once a week and he's never been burnt. I will pick up the stick next time i'm at the store though, I had no idea about all the different ratings! I need to check out that website!
