My son was born on May 6 at 2:20 a.m., but his birth story is ridiculous and awesome in so many different ways, so here it goes.
On May 5th, DH and I traveled 3.5 hours to the town where my grandma lives for a baby shower my mom was throwing for me. We had a c-section scheduled for May 11 with a due date of May 17. I asked my OB about traveling after she had checked me at my weekly appt, and she did not seem concerned about an overnight that far from home. However, they printed all my prenatal records just in case. I asked DH if we should take the hospital bag just in case. He said yes, and I did not grab it on the way out of the door. Oops!
We arrived at the shower after making the trip. DH went to spend time with my dad, grandpa, his dad, and his grandpa who had also made the trip with my MIL and GMIL for the shower. The shower was fun, but I had growing concerns because I had not felt LO move almost the whole evening. I was itching to get back to where we were staying because I wanted to lay down and try to get LO to move. We went to my grandma's and DH went to sleep with me not too far behind him. I think I laid down around 11:30 p.m. After an hour of restlessness and two trips to the bathroom, I felt a rubber band snapping sensation and a GUSH of water. I woke DH up and we threw back the covers to see that, in fact, my water had broken. DH was instantly awake and we called my OB back home to inform her of the situation. We woke up my mom and grandma. We followed my mom to the local hospital and were taken up to L&D. I handed over my prenatal records, which they were extremely grateful for and informed them of LO's breech position. Contractions started soon after arriving to the hospital, so they quickly x-rayed to confirm that he was breech. Once they confirmed it, things happened so quickly. They prepped me for the c-section while DH took care of some paperwork and changed into scrubs. I was terrified. We went to the OR, and our little Nolan Joseph was born at 2:20 a.m. 7 lbs 12 oz, 21.5 inches long and as perfect as could be.
While it was not ideal to deliver at a hospital that far from home without anything we had packed in our hospital bag, so much good had come out of the situation. For one, I was able to be with my side of the family, and had Nolan been born near home, who knows how long it would have been before they got to meet him. Also, DH's parents were there with his grandparents staying in a hotel, so they also got to meet him right away. Now that we are back at home, DH's family has had their time with him, too. We could not have planned that any better.
Good luck to all the May moms out there yet to deliver. Don't stress about the day because seeing your LO for the first time makes you forget everything you worried about before delivery!
