Anyone not use bottles?

I'm ebf my baby boy (he is 3 months today). I love breastfeeding and have had no issues as far as supply or pain. I'm a SAHM and plan to bf for at least a year.

Lo has taken a bottle in the past, but maybe only gets 1-2 bottles a week. Lately he has regressed and won't take the bottle.

This became a problem when I was out to lunch today and lo was home with DH. He cried and cried and hubby felt really bad and a bit jealous that I can provide for lo in a way that he can't right now.. Of course this will all change once lo gets older.

Do any of you ladies ebf without using bottles and how does that work for you? I guess an option is for me to try to give lo a bottle once a day but that seems like such a pain.

  • No bottles or cups here.  It's all straight from the boob.  We tried giving her the bottle/cup early on, but around 5 months, she started refusing it.  We tried every possible iteration and no luck.  She just will not take it, and she doesn't eat more than a tbsp of solids a day.

The way it works is that I'm never away from her for more than 3 hours or so.  4 hours at the most, when I was still working part-time.  I wish I had more freedom, but it's just the way it is right now.  I just try to focus on the fact that she's healthy and happy and in no time, I'll be missing the little baby stage.

  • DD got roughly a bottle a month until she started refusing them at 4mos.  Since I am a SAHM I didn't push it.  Sure I don't get out much without her but it rarely bothers me and is so worth it.  It has never bothered DH, well except for when he knows I'd like to go out and can't.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • We did for a while, but around 5 months LO quit taking them. Around then he started going to bed early (around 7) and sleeping for a few hours, so if I wanted to go out without him, I went in the evening. Mostly, I took him with me pretty much everywhere. It hasn't been a problem that was big enough to fight. Now, he takes a straw cup no problem.

So if you want to, you can try different bottles and fight it out. But if you don't, you can just wait it out and eventually it doesn't matter any more.

  • I bf my son until he was just over 12 months (had to wean to do IVF again) and he was ebf until about 5 1/2 mo when he started on some solids, but when it came to getting breastmilk he was all about the boob.  :)  like the other women, I really was only gone from him for 3 hours max and yes sometimes it was a pain, but looking back it never really bothered me.  he was just my little sidekick ;)  very rarely (we're talking maybe once a month) he'd take a bottle if I happen to be gone longer than 3 hours but I never had a problem with him taking it - as long as it was warmed EXACTLY to his liking.  I actually preferred him to be just on the boob rather than a bottle because there was no clean up!!

  • DD1 took no bottles ever. She was just with me all the time or I'd sneak out for a while after she went to sleep for the night.

DD2 just took 1 bottle the other night for the first time. I don't plan on her taking another until August 4, when I have concert tickets, haha.

This stage goes so fast that I really don't mind it. By the time DD1 was drinking from a straw cup (about 11 months), I decided to never use a bottle - just unneccessary for us.

  • My younger DD only took a bottle a handful of times.  Mostly, I just brought her with me everywhere.  By 8 months she was drinking water out of a sippy cup really well, and eating some solids, so I could leave her for longer periods (like 4-5 hours).  She's still nursing now, but I can leave her for most of the day (6-7 hours), and just nurse her when I get home.

    Very very rarely.

    1) He doesn't take one
    2) There is no reason for him to

If I am gone for an hour or two for some reason without him and he'll need to eat (a date night for example) he will take SOME.. but usually only a few ounces and then he chows down when I get back home.

I have never tried to give E a bottle. I just resigned myself to always being with her. 99% of the time it is no big deal. And the truth is that I am glad we didn't have any bottles in the house. When breastfeeding was really, really hard - I wanted to quit. Had there been bottles in the house - I would have quit BFing and given her formula.

We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

  • I SAH until LO was 10 months. She only started taking the bottle at 6 months old. We went through 4 kinds until we found that she liked the Playtex Nursers best. Then, she became a bottle loving baby and never wanted to nurse.

  • DS refused bottles if i was around, but when he was with DH or a sitter, i always left a bottle for him. He usually took it. Its one of those things where if they get hungry enough, they will eat. i always tried to feed him before i left, but always left some milk for him just in case.

  • My daughter has only ever had breast milk and will only take it from the breast. She is 7.5 months old now. I would happily give her a bottle if I could pump milk, but unfortunately nothing ever comes out and I will not give her formula. If you can pump milk and want to give her a bottle I say go for it. If not, it is definitely not necessary. I wish that she would take a bottle every now and then and I could pump, just for convenience sake. Honestly thought, it's not a big deal. I don't mind only being able to leave my sweetie for a few hours.
  • No bottles here.  We're working on giving sips of water in an open cup but that's not replacing breastfeeding, just because it's hot and i'm sure he gets thristy.
