Not doing WCM?

I'm just curious if anyone else is not doing WCM. DD couldn't eat dairy and has been on Neocate but now finally seems to be tolerating it (though she's only had a couple bites of yogurt and cheese but no bleeding like before so I think she's hopefully outgrown her MSPI!)

We asked out pediatrician for a good WCM alternative and she highly encouraged Almond Milk (but wants us to put extra olive oil on DD's veggies, etc for fat). She never said anything negative about WCM but I found out from a friend who has the same pedi that our pediatrician won't give her own children WCM because of the growth hormones. I guess her extended family runs a dairy farm and she has seen too much of the business to feel comfortable giving milk to her kids - she and my friend were talking (since my friend is also very anti WCM) and she said that even the so called 'organic' farms are milking their cows while the cows are pregnant and even the natural hormone levels are very high.

I started doing some research and came across quite a few articles- this one was really interesting:

It got me wondering how bad WCM really is. I know soy products are getting a lot of flack lately and being blamed for early puberty but how do people know it's not milk? My friend is Chinese and obviously soy is staple in many Asian countries and kids there aren't going through puberty at 8 (and I spent a large part of childhood in Japan and ate a ton of soy with no consequences) so I can't imagine how non GMO soy could be that bad... I will still limit it for DD but am definitely more weary of dairy/meat (but I'm vegetarian and don't eat meat anyway).

Anyone else going to stay away from WCM and what are your reasons?

Re: Not doing WCM?

  • We thought DD had a milk intolerance but blood testing has shown no allergy (and at the time we thought it just because she was so unhappy).  We've tried a little cheese and are going to try yogurt this week.  I plan to do Organic WCM.  I've heard that Walmart's brand has no growth hormone.  But really I'm not all that concerned, I tend to be a little more relaxed about those things.

I will probably buy milk without growth hormone, and I'm usually not a big organic buyer.

  • We are going to use a mix of Hemp and Almond Milk. We will not use WCM since Avery has not outgrown MSPI. Grandparents on both sides have been diagnosed as Lactose Intolerant. Since DH and I have started including some diary in our diets, we have noticed that it does not sit well with our systems. We will probably adjust to the Paleo diet soon.

  • I'm just asking because the article I linked to as well as other stuff I'm reading online says even the "no added hormone" milk has excessive hormones because even though there are no growth hormones, the farms are keeping the cows pregnant constantly and milking them year after year so their hormone levels are testing high as well even though they are "organic" or "growth hormone free"... I read a few studies that showed all milk on the market nowadays is very high in hormone content - even the stuff that supposedly isn't (a lot was testing at the same level as the GMO stuff...)

  • none in our house, but i'm vegan, so it makes sense not to feed the kids animal products.  my plan is to continue providing breastmilk only till dd2 is 18 months old.  then to start the gradual weaning process by introducing soy milk.

  • Ev hasn't outgrown his milk protein allergy yet (the soy part he's outgrown, but not the milk), so we'll be giving either soy, almond, or a combination. I'm a little leery about the controversy surrounding soy, so I want to talk to the pedi about it and get her thoughts before I make a final decision. But I've also heard that almond isn't nutritionally complete enough to be a good WCM substitute, so I'm just not sure what will be best. Hope the pedi has some insight.
