What kind of cup? Sippy, straw, or "real?"

Hi, everyone. I never really introduced myself here- I just kind of jumped in a couple weeks ago. It was nice to find a board that I could really relate to. :)

I'd like to start using a cup with my LO, more for exploration than anything else at this point.  I'm not sure what type of cup to use- sippy, straw, or a "real" cup. What did you guys use and why?

FWIW, LO BFs and is also comfortable with drinking from a bottle. We are doing BLW for solids.

TIA!

  • From 6 months on I used real tiny cups with both kids with meals so they could learn how to drink from a regular cup. They don't really need the liquid if they are ebf so why not practice. At 9 months I taught DS how to drink from a straw so that he could have an on the go option and he took to that right away, it's just about time to teach DD. Worked well for us, I don't see much reason to use a spout sippy.

  • I absolutely love the playtex lil gripper straw cup. We've been using it since just over 4 months. LO has drinking through a straw down pat. We figure that sippy cups are bad for teeth and horrid to break the habit of, and straws are good to use to keep drinks off of your teeth. I would like to teach her how to handle a regular cup but for now I want her to be able to pracitce using it without my help.

  • My LO is EBF and can drink from a bottle but just will not drink from a sippy. She just won't suck on it. We have introduced a normal cup but because it just pours into her mouth she will just let it poor back out of her mouth and onto her clothes most of the time.
This is the only thing she will really drink out of. It has a silicone type spout on it and drinks more like a cup than a sippy. It just reduces the amount of liquid that can come out. She will actually suck on this.

The other way we get her to drink a little water is by putting some in a straw and giving it to her that way, we started that at restaurants. She will not suck on the straw if we give it to her that way so I plan to introduce a straw cup to her soon.

  • I personally would skip the sippy and either do straw cup, or regular if you have the time and patience.  The ZoLi straw cup is an excellent trainer cup, my son drank water from it at four months while I BF.  After a year, I used it for WCM until I moved him over to the Thermos Foogo.  He likes to pull straws out so I had to use cups with straws built in.  If you want to practice regular cup drinking, the Doidy cup is a great trainer, it angles the water for them so it's easy to drink.

  • I started DS on a straw cup around 7-8 months or so, and he took to it right away. We completely skipped sippy cups. He can use a regular cup now, but he still uses straws most of the time.

As I'm sure you've heard before, straw cups are great because adults use them too, so you never have to worry about weaning from them.

  • We tried everything. DS likes the Rubbermaid litterless juice box or an open cup. The juice box is less messy.
  • When he was 4 months, he got BM in a tommy tippee stage 1 sippy cup, as it had handles on both sides for him to grip.

We have just kind of varied it and now he drinks from a straw cup nearly 100% of the time, though he has a toddler water bottle that he uses on the go. I say get a few types and see what your baby prefers- and what you prefer, some of them are so leaky!!

  • At home, DS started using a tiny glass at 6 months. That is all he uses at our house and the grandparents'.  For hydration on-the-go, we use a  4oz Lifefactory glass bottle w/ sippy spout so it doesn't spill in his bag.

We weren't really into the sippy or straw idea as those products are largely made of plastic, and we minimize plastic.I think that using a cup has a drawback of being a bit wet here and there, but benefits in terms of motor skills, being like the rest of the family, and learning to be careful vs. just bandying his cup all about. In general, we are baby gear minimalists and I didn't have any interest in purchasing special cups when we had perfectly good little juice glasses already.

  • Thank you guys! I appreciate the advice.

I'm going to a give the straw cup a try and see how it goes. :)
