Hi all,
My partner and I are in the midst of infertility stuff, but also furthering our investigations on adoption.
We are a queer couple, I'm a 35 year old professor and my partner is a 40 year old 2nd grade (talk about cute overload!) teacher.
We've been TTC for over a year and I have PCOS and DOR. We are *most* likely not going to move onto IVF because while we have ok coverage for it, if roughly runs around the same cost as adoption would, and I"d rather adopt anyway.
We've explored adoption a few times in the past - I was telling my family that I planned to adopt when I was 6 years old-- I want to be someone who *chooses* adoption rather than feel like it is a last resort.
I have some questions, specifically about adoption in NYC. I think we are planning to use an agency, though that may just be because I don't know very much about not using one. Can someone point me to resources on non-agency adoptions?
We are most likely seeking domestic infant adoption as neither of us wants to adopt an older child and most international programs prohibit gays from adopting.
Also, right now, the forerunner for our agency is Adoption Star in Buffalo- We know a few families who have adopted through them. But I welcome other experiences there?
Additionally, I'm curious if people have had experience with Spence-Chapin?
Does anyone have any other agencies suggestions that can place children with gay couples in NYC? For instance, Gladney won't place with queer or single mom families.
Thanks,
marisa
Re: New/Questions
The FAQ will give you an overview and resources for all types of adoption, and methods to do each, including facilitators and consultants, if they're legal in your state.
No experience with the agencies you mentioned.
Have you considered embryo adoption?
New York makes it a little difficult to use an out-of-state agency (DH and I live in NYC also). Here's a link to the approved out-of-state agencies (sorry I can't make it clicky on my mac):

If you work with an out-of-state agency you'll still have to have a homestudy done by a NY agency. We're working with Independent Adoption Center; they have offices in several other states but their NY office won't be open until sometime this summer, so we're using Spence Chapin for our homestudy and have been really happy with them so far. I know IAC doesn't have any restrictions on adoptive parents (age, gay/straight, single/couple, etc.) but I don't know about Spence Chapin. I don't really know much about non-agency adoptions but definitely check out the FAQ above. Good luck!
Spence-Chapin's good with they gay. But thanks for the note on IAC--
My step-aunt adopted their little girl through Spence Chapin, and she said that they loved it.
Welcome and good luck on your journey!
